On a related topic, I have heard a bunch of stories about sexual abuse in the military. I know that last fall there was an article in the newspaper saying that more stringent rules will apply. I have to wonder.
The most recent example, while not sexual, was that an officer was beating 4 seamen with a board for no particular reason other than that they were slower at doing the job than he wished. He did this repeatedly. When the beatings got so bad that the seamen complained, the officer was not really punished. He was just transferred to a new post. Sounds kind of like the Catholic Church.
A sexual one I heard not too long ago: a guy was forced to go down on his knees... I asked if he complained to a higher authority. He said he didn't because he 'understood' the officer. "There aren't any women around." Then he said, "It wasn't so bad for me. There was a guy who entered a few months before me. He was much better looking, so he got a lot worse treatment." |
