This is a book that .38 Special alerted me too. I'm mid way through it and, in my opinion, it is a must read for every person who has any interest in education. Whether they be a parent, student or educator.

Thanks for posting that. Gatto is always a good read and a fundamental thinker on education. Dumbing is really a condensed version of his Underground History of American Education.

Lots of books I could recommend, you'll find them on EFL Classroom 2.0.
