|
|
Hello,
Wondering if anyone gives MS and HS students self study time before exams. I give them the day before exams. I used to not give them the time at all but they've worn me down over the years asking for it.
So I'll make it easy to answer.
1) Do you give self study time during your classes before exams?
2) If yes, how many days before exams do you start?
Just wondering. |

1. Self-study is really a hit or miss, but I do it just because I know the kids are stressing about midterms. So, a little break might help them relax.
2. Usually, midterms are a week-long, so the week right before midterms, I allow all my classes a self-study period.
There will always be students who actually utilize that time to study and of course, there are opposites too. As long as the class isn't too disruptive, I generally don't mind. |

At my previous PS schools the kids have been allowed to self study for one week prior and review for one week after test season.
Doesn't look like it's going to happen at my new school though. I'm going to have to teach - and knowing that they will be completely distracted - I'm just going to playThe Price is Right Game Show. It's generally a lot of fun, but I know the kids won't be interested in anything I teach in those weeks. A shame. |

| Make a rule everyone studies quietly or I will stop self study and resume the previously planned lesson. |

Wow, you guys are nice.
I work at a HS, as for self study it depends on what it is for.
If it is for a exam like midterm I will give each class 1 day. I teach them 2x a week so the other day is used for lessons.
If it is a word test like my high school has, I have learned it is a bad idea for self studt so I will take the word list and make up sentences and turn the worksheet into a game. This way the kids will all have a chance to learn the words on the test. |

| I let them have the class before the test to study for their English test. I don't allow them to study other stuff, it is English class after all. I tell them it has to be done quietly. Some classes comply, and I'll let them watch Mr. Bean or something for 5 mins at the end as a treat. The classes that don't comply get to study more. It helps if you walk round when they study, and ask a pair of kids a qustion relating to what is on the open page, it keeps them on task a little better. |
