Hello,

I would post this on the International forum but I can't get on so....

Does anyone know any job boards or forums for Mexico or Central America?

Thanks

I don't have any experience with this site personally but it looks pretty good. After I finish here, I plan on using it to find something in South America.

http://www.teachermexconnect.com/

If you have any luck with it, or find an alternative, please shoot me a PM.

I was in Latin America for several years before coming here. Really I think this site is your best bet. There are some incredibly helpful people on the Latin America / Mexico forums.

If you're interested in Colombia, the people at www.poorbuthappy.com seem helpful also, although it's not an EFL site. Let me know if you have any specific questions about working in Latin America.

Generally speaking, how does the salary and conditions in Latin America compare to Korea for ESL teachers?

It really varies tremendously. There are some private schools and "elite universities that pay about the same as in Korea. However, most language schools will pay just enough to get by and enjoy yourself a bit. Most universities offer a comfortable lifestyle, but you can't save more than about 200USD per month.

Students are mostly respectful and fun if you can get past the very lax attitude. Teachers are highly respected in Latin America and get an honorific title. However, there are some very spoiled self-entitled kids at the more expensive universities and private schools.

I could ramble forever, so it might be best if you have a specific question. But, again, I recommend going directly to the Mexico / Latin America forums.

I notice they have the following subforums for "poor but happy" in Asia:

Quote:
China
Japan
India
Nepal
Thailand
Laos
Cambodia
Vietnam
Malaysia
Indonesia
Philippines

notice what country is missing? Laughing is it because of the not 'poor' or 'not happy' part

How's the mexconnect job going?

I was trying to find out about that site and read on another forum that it was a scam. Generally speaking a recruiter shouldn't charge you $40 to submit your CV, they should get their cash from the institutions in which they place applicants.

I'm under the impression I'm either going to be too poor at the bank, but warmly received and happy or just moderately rich with $2,000 to $10,000 in the bank, but extremely uncomfortable as Korea comes out to be. Seems to be that the enjoyable places don't pay, but the least enjoyable pay more. Well, logic would have it.

I taught in Mexico before coming to Korea in '03. I'm not sure a day goes by that I don't miss it. A place where holidays mean drinking and dancing with pretty girls, rather than moaning about how badly the Japanese treated us. The downside is that I made about US$600 a month, which allowed me to live quite well there but did nothing toward paying a student loan.

Yes, Mexicans do respect teachers very much, but aren't exactly diligent students. If you can roll with things and not worry when the power goes out or the photocopier doesn't work or there's disco music blasting from the supermarket next door, it's great. A plus: my hogwan director kept telling me to date the students!

I too am interested in South America, but always hear about high crime such as muggings, murder, and such happening down there due to serious social problems. Name some good countries. Are flights cheap to go up to the USA from there in the event you need to bail? I know it seems pricey from Korea due to distance.

Flights within central and south America seem very pricey to me. They might be cheaper from major resorts, but I don't want to talk through my hat. I can say the bus system in Mexico was good and cheap, certainly better and cleaner than Greyhound.

Mexico felt safe to me, other than the irritance of petty theft (my camera). I would only be genuinely nervous in Mexico City and in border cities in the north. I had a co-worker in Korea who taught in Columbia and his officemate was kidnapped. He was treated quite well and released fairly cheaply, after the criminals discovered ESL teachers don't have much money! One perk of Korea, I suppose, is that the criminals are more predictably likely to be your bosses rather than unknown people on the street...
