I am looking at signing a 6 month extension to my one year contract.
Does anyone know if you get the same trip ticket home payed for at the end of your original 1 year contract that you would get if you re-signed for another year? |

As I understand correctly, if you go home at the end of your 1st contract, they will pay for you flight. While at the end of your 6-month contract, they will NOT. Unless you have a special arrangement that you will not go home at the end of your 1st contract, and save that flight home at the end of the 6-month extension. I think there's a clause in your contract that states renewing/extending is not considered a continuation of any previous contract.
Does that answer your question? |

| Does SMOE let you extend your 6th month contract by 6 months? I heard they don't let you do that... that's what I wanted to do. |

| You can renew for 6 months if your school agrees and you get a really good review. It's case by case. As for the flight, you either get the renewal flights (back to your home country and then to Seoul again) OR you get a one way flight at the end of your contract. However, now they offer money instead of flight so obviously it'd be smarter to take the 2 million for the renewal flight than the 1.3 for the one way. |

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I have some questions also.
I was just approached last week by my school about renewing my contract, and they were ok with my doing an additional 6 months to finish out the school year in March 2011 (August 2009 SMOE intake).
However, I emailed Jon Pak and he said that SMOE strongly prefers that we do 1-year extensions of our contract. You mentioned this is on a case-by-case basis. What exactly is the review process? |

Jon Pak is Not SMOE, and he is simply advising you on what they prefer ( if its even accurate, it may not be)
Talk to your school and see what they want to do. If they want you til the end of the year then they will likely get it done. If not then say goodbye, its been nice, and see ya later |

Well, in both emails I've gotten his signature is listed as "Lead Program Coordinator, SMOE."
I don't mind negotiating directly with my school because I know they're fine with a 6-month extension, but my big concerns are the issues of a pay raise, the airfare, etc. Doesn't SMOE handle these things? If they're not on board this year for the extensions, then no dice? For reference, here are the emails:
"Hi xxxx
We don't have an offical 6 months contract. We would like to do 1 year
contracts with our teachers.
If you would like to renew for a year, we will send you documents to
start your renewal process."
"Hi xxxx,
My supervisor wants to keep it 1 year contracts.
We did have some 6months contrat but didn't go so well because there was no official contract and because of visa issues.
If you school hires independently, then you can find out but I'm not sure how your school does it.
If you change your mind and want to do one more year, let me know`
Thank you~"
Thanks for any input. |

I still stand by what I said, if your school wants you for 6 months then they will likely get it done.
You also proved my point by him admitting that "my supervisor" doesn't want.......
Jon is basically powerless and tows the company line. |

| It's doable but only if your school wants you back. You can't transfer schools and do a 6 monther. I tried that last year. |

Hello Teachers,
If you are completing your contract and wanted to renew for 6 months, these are the steps to take.
Please note that 6 months extensions are not guaranteed.
SMOE preffers 1 year contracts.
- SMOE will provide renewal Bonus Vacation days of seven (7) Calendar days.
- SMOE will provide ten (10) days of vacation within the 6 months duration.
- SMOE will provide the 2,000,000 won (KRW) at the first months pay of the new contract.
- NSET will be responsible for their air ticket upon completion of the 6 month contract.
If you agree with the terms, 6 months extensions may happen.
Please keep in mind that you will need approval from your school and principal.
If you score low on your evaulation and have poor performance, it may lower your chances of renewing.
You will have to come into the SMOE head office after you have signed your new contract. Please give Jon Pak a call: 02-399-9774 |
