Hey Guys,
Just read this today, but I think it's great news. Basically, Air Asia X (Air Asia's long distance carrier) has gotten rights to fly to Seoul!
Hopefully this will mean cheap flights to all of SE Asia and even possibly connections to Australia.
Anyway, here is the article: http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/4/16/business/6065503&sec=business
They say inaugural flights may be in October when S. Korea and Malaysia celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties.
What do you think, is this good news? Or do you think Korea will try to stop them from flying here even though they got permission? I do know that this could mean less money for Korean Air and Asiana, as I'm sure Air Asia will be cheaper. The other nice thing is that Air Asia plans to fly daily.

It's almost always good news for a city when a low-fare carrier starts flying there. In America, the "Southwest effect" was dramatic. They could fight it, and have no idea on the chances of that winning. To what extent are Asiana and Korean Air dominant at ICN? I think not very much, since dozens of other carriers fly there, but I don't know. |

That is good news, though unfortunately for me......3 years late. I will believe it when I see it.
Although Asiana and Korean Air don't have a monopoly at ICN I think they have significant influence with regards to what airlines are allowed to fly to Korea. If you look at Air Asia's route map, they fly to pretty much every other East Asian country apart from Korea and Japan, and Jetstar have Japan covered in their network.
If Air Asia did start flying here it would open up so many possibilities, not just within SE Asia but also India, Australia and even back to the UK. I hope they succeed. |
