Must an applicant possess a TEFL/TESOL or CELTA in order to teach?
What is the timeframe of these qualifications, how much do they cost, and ultimately....are they worth the hassle? |

IF you are NOT planning to teach anywhere other than Korea then a simple, 100 hour- on-line course is adequate.
IF you plan to teach ANYWHERE other than Korea then get a class based TESOL/CELTA.
In Korea your TEFL will get you +100k per month at a public school. It probably won't get you anything at a hakwon.
On-line courses run from 160-300k won.
CELTA can run as much as 2 million won (or equivalent).
In Korea you DO need a bachelors degree.

I done the CELTA Course at the British Council in Seoul, South Korea. It cost about 2.25 million KRW. It took four weeks to complete and you are unable to work whilst you do the course.
I would highly recommend a CELTA course as it provides the necessary practical experience and a relevant TEFL Certificate. It can also lead on to other things (examining, training teachers, etc) and is a good networking activity.
Again, as Ttompatz mentioned, if you are not going to teach any other than in Korea or don't wish to teach for an extended time the course is not for you but if you take your professional development seriously then I would recommend the course. |
