The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced Wednesday (Apr. 23) it will have Seoul tour guides cover the areas of Sinchon, Itaewon, Insa-dong and Dongdaemun starting from Friday, April 23rd.
Working in pairs in the busy districts of Myeongdong and Namdaemun, the tour guides have been giving directions and other interpreting services in English, Chinese and Japanese. Donning red jackets, they patrol the street most frequently visited by tourists and were quickly nicknamed a moving tourist booth. This service began last year.
Sinchon, which is frequently sought out by Chinese tourist groups, will have more Chinese-speaking tour guides while more English-speaking guides will be in Itaewon. The metropolitan government plans to further dispatch tour guides to Jamsil and two other districts by November this year.
Meanwhile, the tour guides in Myeongdong and Namdaemun provided about 97,000 instances of help from January to March this year. Of them, 65,000 were in the case of Japanese tourists and 7,900 cases were for Chinese tourists.
