My parents are coming here, and we're thinking of hitting Jeju for a few days.

Is it very simple to rent a car there? Or do you need an international driver's license?

Does anyone have any good suggestions as to where to stay? We'd like some sort of bungalow on the beach, if possible. Quieter and simpler rather than a big hotel in a city. Though maybe this will be tough, because we're going May 6th, which I've heard is the busy season.

Anyone else have any thoughts or advice? I'd appreciate it.

Yes, you'll need a international (or Korean) drivers licence. Getting a car should be simple, there are many rental agencies outside the airport in the carpark.

I don't know of any bungalows "on the beach" but you could try Hamdeok beach which is in the north, to the east of the city. Nice beach and quieter than the city for sure. There are a lot of places to stay there along the waterfront.

May isn't the busy season (that's August) but still, book your plane tickets well in advance. I'd do it ASAP.

Thanks, man. But bummer about that international driver's license. Is there really no way around this? How bad is it getting one of those?

I went 3 years ago with an intl. license and they never asked for anything. I wouldn't bet on those odds, but it worked like that even though I had all my documents.

Depends on where you're from.

You can rent a taxi driver by the day. It costs about 100 000 won. This is much better than the bus tours that tend to rush you through all the nice stuff and leave you stranded for over an hour and a half at sucky places like The Folk Village and The Orange farm.

I went to Jeju on holiday in 2006 with a Korean driver's license and they never asked to see it. They just wanted my credit card number. I was a bit irked because I had a month before that traded in my Canadian license in order to get the Korean license for my trip to Jeju and it turned out to be unnecessary.

Now that I live on Jeju I understand: thousands of cars are rented here!! so they deal with such volume they probably don't care. certainly if you get asked for your license you could just go some other dealer and rent another one.

We took the bus around Jeju and that was really easy because it is just one big circle. We also took taxis in town and that was super easy and cheap - just another option. My parents took the bus when they were here WITHOUT me and they said it was easy and actually fun.

Also, on Jeju we stayed in the south by Jungmun Beach. We were within walking distance to the beach, plus our motel had a kitchen and separate bedroom. It was surprisingly very nice for only being 40K a night. If you want specific info on it, pm me. Unfortunately I don't know the name, but I can give you pretty detailed directions from what I remember.
