I went last week for my birthday to a shooting range in Myeong-dong. Right around the block from exit 9 in Myeong-dong. I fired a desert eagle and it was awesome, although more expensive than I thought it would be. Between 40,000-50,000 per clip. Anyone know if there is a cheaper place in Seoul or is this the norm? There were slight discounts if you want to shoot multiple guns, but I'm not going break the bank on this. Also this was the first time I've fired a gun in my life. Anyone go to a shooting range back at home? I'm curious to know what the rate is compared to Korea.

Yes, I'm drunk with sheer power now. I've always wanted to fire a gun and finally doing it was exhilarating. Although 50$ a pop is too steep to do it regularly. I'm sure it's cheaper just to buy a gun, although illegal.

You have to remember the range makes its money on the rental of the gun, especially a Desert Eagle and the ammo for it. You are not talking about a 38special. I guess your range fee for one hour alone is about 10,000. It is a fun activity if you can afford it.

There's one in Ilsan on the edge of WesternDom.

If you're not Korean you have to pay double the price marked on the 'menu'.

The cheapest gun at the range I went to was 40kwon, desert eagle was only an extra ten, so I figured I might as well fire the hand cannon. I wouldn't mind paying half price for a more standard hand gun. Are you saying you know a place in Korea that charges 10,000won an hour?

Try to sober up a little, cowboy. Depending on the caliber of the pistol, the Desert Eagle can be a pricey beast. Cheapest .50 American Express cartridges I can find, for example, scoot at about a buck or more per round -- and that's the dirt cheap stuff. Odds are, the shooting range is using a non-lead bullet (possibly an X bullet by Barnes) and that will be more expensive. (If the range is not using non-lead, they ought to have a lot of ventilation going. If they are not, limit your time inside the range. Keep in mind, also, that the primers also release a lead-mercury vapor into the air, which can be more hazardous than the lead bullets themselves over time.) Then, of course, there are importation duties and beauracracy (which are no doubt through the roof, seeing as the RoK lists owning a firearm as a CAPITAL crime). Then there is supply -- ammunition companies aren't likely to import large amounts of cartridges outside of government sponsored deals with the military.

You're essentially paying for a rare privilege that is outstandingly unfashionable in that country.

Frankly, I'm quite astounded that they have real live-fire ranges in Korea at all. But the reported price of $50 dollars per magazine? That's 7 rounds. Pop... pop... pop... pop... pop... pop... pop. Smaller calibers than .50 hold more rounds (up to 9 for .357 magnum), but what's the damn point of that?

Next time, if they're charging per magazine, go for a full-sized semi-auto in 9mm, such as a Glock 17 (17 round mag. capacity) or, better yet, the XDm in 9mm (19 round mag. capacity).

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but don't get funny now. You aren't Rambo. Laughing
