it's about the lousy korea blog that got shut down by it's author after netizens threatened the lives of the bloggers and the bloggers children.
I think I read Lousy Korea one time a couple months ago. I didnt know it still existed until today. |

The few things I read of hers were pretty inflammatory, overtly racist and generally mean. She doesn't deserve death threats against herself or her children, but she does suck. |

Threats were being made not only to L.K., but to other bloggers who were linked on her blog, and even the families of those bloggers. Lousy Korea is not the only blog that has been targeted by death threats, nor the only expat: Korean Rum Diary is another blogger who received a death threat with detailed descriptions of how he would be murdered, and included his real name and address.
Popular blogger Brian in Jeollanam-do was recently reported to immigration, most likely because of his critical opinions, and the president of the Association for Teachers of English in Korea also had his life threatened. Some of these people were attempting to discuss Korean social issues honestly. Others took negative approaches. However, it is shocking that there are people who believe that when somebody writes something they dislike, an appropriate response is to threaten that persons job, life, friends or family. |

I didn't read much of the lousy korea blo, so maybe i'm missing some things, but I never took it seriously. It was too over the top to be real. I can't believe that people over reacted to it. then again koreans are pretty thin skinned. |

Sometimes we go over the top. Sometimes we are mean and less than tolerant. Sometimes we make fun of Korea as a defense mechanism. We do these things to cope with the shit we given on the street, at work and everywhere we go in this country. |
Word of advice: Don't try to claim the moral highground and then admit you do this. I mean, isn't this what those idiot Korean bigots are doing as well (minus nutball death threater)?
I also don't think we should complain about portrayals in the media if our blogs are mirror images of said media portrayals- over-generalizations, inflammatory, possible misrepresentations, etc. I mean if we can criticize Korean culture (which we should be able to do), shouldn't they be able to criticize expat culture? The sad thing is people on both sides love to dish it out but have a hard time taking it.
Anyways, ignore the keyboard warrior-nutballs and keep on posting your view. Freedom of Speech beats Censorship anyday. I'd rather see Nazis/Pacifist-Anarchists with free speech than without it.
At the same time most of us learned that if you run around teasing a kid for being fat (which albeit is true, and 'your take') don't complain about free speech when he pops you in the lip. This goes both ways.
Not that this justifies death threats, just we need to keep these things in mind and maybe exercise some self-control and not go over the top or succumb to our defense mechanisms, and maybe find better ways to cope with our stress. Some people cope with stress by turning the other cheek or giving their cloak, or yoga. Others take to the blog and the board. Both are fine, but deep-down I'd probably be better if I was prayin or exercisin or knittin or drawin or music-makin right now instead of keyboard-warriorin. Ah, but it's such fun isn't it?
The crappy thing is 9/10 of these death threats are going to be not carried out but that 1/10 is not and then things will really escalate. |

I agree with everything except the bolded bit. Popping someone in the lip isn't free speech. It's barbarianism. |

I agree a witty comeback is far more preferable, but if you're that fat kid who gets teased everyday, let's be real, the only course is to eventually sock the guy in the face. I wish people weren't like that, but that is the only way sometimes they learn. |

Of course I don't think death threats are the proper reaction to a few posts on an English-language blog read by, like, two dozen people. But I also don't think people should be surprised that a blog designed to get a reaction, um, actually gets a reaction.
My blog, Brian in Jeollanam-do, has come up a few times when discussing this mess, but I really think I brought a lot more to the table than a site that spent each and every post tearing Korea down.
I know as well as anyone that Koreans can be sensitive to criticism, and that some among them try to dictate what foreigners should think and write about Korea. However, Koreans also are sensitive to threats against free speech, something you've probably noticed the last few years if you've been paying attention to local news and politics. Some people have come after me and my site, yes, but many other Koreans have defended me and, if not what I've written, at least defended my ability to write it.
The nutjobs who go after bloggers are no different than the nutjob bloggers who go after Koreans. I'm sorry to see blogs shut down by netizen bullies, but I'm not sorry to see Lousy Korea and a few other of those crappy blogs go away. |

People who issue death threats are lower on the ladder of iniquity than the people making inflammatory comments whom they threaten. So it may not be moral highground but it's still morally higher. |
