I have a great game I play with my students. I have played this with students age 7 -adults.
Teams or individuals. What ever. The game is making sentences. The person who finishes the sentence is either out, or gives up points. I usually play this with ship won. never cost me more then 1,000 won.
Another way I play this is to give no money. That way I give a ship won to every person or team who is not out. so if person or team one looses, every other person or team gets the coin.
I give each person or team 25 coins. One person, one word. Example, if there are 4 teams:
1. The
2 big
3 dog
4 ate
1 the
2 last
3 piece
4 of
1 cake Person or team number one is out. Must give up a coin.
Or use candy. Or just use points.
So many variations. You can stick to one topic if you are teaching a topic, or let the students make any kind of sentence.
If you use this game and add another twist, please post it. |

The Word Game (that's what I call it anyway)
Write a long word on the board ('friendship' for example), divide students into teams, have them write new words using only the letters in the word (shine, fend, ripe, etc etc). I give a half point per word, the kids love it. |

Put the alphabet on the board in a grid, put as much space around each letter as you can. Or if you've got a decent projection set up, you can use Notepad or Word and a computer, your shoulder will thank you later.
Grab the clock off the wall, or use the online stopwatch or something, and give them one minute per letter to come up with as many words beginning with that letter as they can. Write them down next to each letter. It gets pretty hectic, so sometimes it's a good idea to take a minute off, especially if you're writing everything on a chalkboard.
26 minutes later add up how many words they came up with. I usually pit the classes against each other and give the winning class some kind of prize. |

The old celebrity head one is quick and easy - I assume most people know that one already. Write the name of a celeb above their heads and let them guess who it is with only yes/no questions. Get creative with the names, eg Kim Jong Il, Lee Hyori, the students/teachers actual names, etc.
Depending on the age group, what I call the 'face game' works for younger kids up to maybe 10 years old. Two teams, one circle on the board for each team. Ask them random questions (spell a word, what colour shoes/socks/shirt does a certain student in the class have, what day was it yesterday/day before, name a Korean/western food beginning with A etc. Just think up a list on your way to school). First hand up gets to answer, if they answer correctly they can draw one thing on their circle (face) - an eye, a nose, an ear, etc. First team with two ears, eyes, a nose, hair, and mouth on their face wins. They can make it fun by drawing a pig's nose, one big and one small eye, only two hairs on their head, vampire fangs etc.
Another is 'scattergories'. Split them into teams, say 4-5 teams for a class of 20. Write 8-10 categories on the board (numbered), make them easier/harder depending on the students' level. Famous people, food, famous brands, animal, body part, sport, hobby, boy's/girl's name, city, country etc. You can start off with less then add more/change some to keep things interesting. Then give them a letter and a time limit (say 3 or 4 mins or so, generally they'll work at the same pace so just play it by ear to begin with). They write a word for each category beginning with the chosen letter. At the end, teams tell you the words, if they have the same word they get no points, for a unique word they get a point. They tend to cheat a lot (eg have two answers ready in case another team has the same word) so you might have to go around and look at their answers rather than getting them to call them out if they get too competitive. Takes a bit of effort to run smoothly but you can get a good 20-30 mins out of this one, even longer if you want. |

Taboo- Your Korean Co-teacher will know this as Speed Quiz.
Have one student at the front he can not look at the board. Write a word on the board. Other students elicit the meaning of the word using either body language or English the student guesses the word.
You can alternatively play this with two teams and students standing at the front. Be warned this is a very noisy activity.
Pass the Paper- Have a ball made of crumpled paper. Play some upbeat music. Students pass around paper. When the music stops whoever has the paper will listen and finish the sentence. Example my favorite color is___.
Directions- Students arrange desks into groups. Have one student blindfolded find his/her way around a maze of desks.
Fast words- Write a letter on the board. One student from each team comes to the front. Students compete to make word lists. |
