So I'm wondering if when I provide an ultimatum to my principal, he will call my bluff and fire me and my girlfriend. We are having a big issue with the plumbing in our apartment and there is no way to make it a year without washing dishes or laundry. We intend to demand that this be resolved or we'll leave, but do you think that we will get fired? And if we are fired, what should we do then?

sorry i didn't see your previous post. Is this a Public School or hagwon? How many months in your contract are you? Does your school own the building, perhaps you should talk to the building manager? Is the plumbing problem so huge you can't simply get a plumber to come out and fix it then bill the school for it? have you called the labor board, telling them that your school is breaching the contract by not providing you with functional housing?

He had a plumber come, and was told that the wall needed to be removed so a pipe could be replaced. This isn't some DIY job, and it would be costly. As this problem was there from the get go, it certainly isn't the OP's fault nor responsibility.

I would simply explain the situation to him. I wouldn't present it as an "ultimatum."

Just tell him that you need functional plumbing and you'll be forced to find employment elsewhere if the school can't or won't take care of it. I'm assuming you've already mentioned the problem multiple times.

If you get fired for something so ridiculous then so be it. Look at your options before you talk to your employer and decide what you'll do just in case it happens.

This is a good idea, except that they could refuse to give allowance since it's past the start of the contract. There's also the problem of key money, required for most decent apartments for two. But, definitely worth the consideration.

Passive aggressive is how you win here.

I liked the idea of showing up in dirty clothes. You should try that.

Yeah - have some smelly days!!!

Talk to the director - lots of people have trouble with their bosses, but most are still people and can be talked to. If he really won't budge, say you can't live like this and you want to go home - may push him to help. I imagine you won't get fired unless your director is a total douche.

Yep, sadly with some employers the only way to get results is to make your problems their problems. Otherwise they dismiss them.

Lots of coulda shoulda wouldas here, but tell your boss firmly that you are disappointed with your conditions. Sure there are dozens of people waiting to take your place, but immigration is backed up a month on their paperwork at the moment. Advantage: you.
