Greets,

Maybe I was a bit naive coming here. I am an IT major, but I thought to myself hey, I speak English so I can probably teach it. Well I need to have 5 or 6 lesson plans ready for the coming week, and I realize I have no idea what I'm doing. Maybe I'm over thinking it, but I'd like to at least be a good teacher. Anyone have any thoughts on how to get over the initial "I don't know wtf I'm doing" hump?

Everything will be Depending upon where you intend to teach

Public schools- Large classes of students with a really mixed ability and mixed level of motivation. You are supposed to work with a Korean Co-teacher. You will get a TV monitor in each classroom so you should be able to use Powerpoint. I've found the Material on EFL Classroom 2.0 ning
Just google it to be very useful. You can also use textbook based dialogues to teach.

Hogwans- Smaller classes, streamlined classes. Materials should be provided. If you decide to take this rout bear in mind many of these jobs are with young children and you will be under a lot of pressure to be annimated fun and energetic to Edutain the students.

Oh I will be teaching high schoolers in a public school. For the 1st grade high schoolers I was told to come up with 4 lesson plans, each on very specific topics that they gave me. Then for the 2nd grade high schoolers I was just kinda told whatever I want I guess heh.

First you need to find out what kind of High school you will be working in.
You'll either be working in an Academic high school or a Technical high school. Technical high schools are where all the students who don't intend on going to University attend. If you will be teaching at a technical high school you might want to brush up on your classroom management skills.

Yeah, it isn't easy but take solace, there have been thousands in the same boat as you and they sailed through. Many even became outstanding teachers!

I've tried to help as much as I can. I made Lessons in a Can. Lots of ideas there to help you. http://bit.ly/bKn9rm

Also see my recent blog post about delivery low tech SCC lessons. http://bit.ly/bcD1rj

2 things on EFL Classroom 2.0 will help. I have a whole teacher training page with articles / videos / transcripts. Watch some of them. Further, search through the videos and watch actual classroom teaching. Either there or on youtube. Also, under resources on EFL Classroom, get the handbooks for teaching. They are full of short, low tech ideas/lessons. buy them as part of the Oxford Basic series. Or get harmer's "How to teach English"

I assume it is Academic, just because I know some students have talked to me about going to college? I don't know. I am already there by the way, maybe I didn't mention that. I won't be teaching students until the 2nd week in May, after their midterms. But I do some teacher teaching now Smile I have time to prep obviously for the student classes, just mind is blank. I'll look through the info though, I don't have anything else to do right now.
