I was out with a few friends in Hongdae last night. me and a friend took a cab from just outside GoGo's at about 4:30am back to Incheon. The cab driver wanted 40,000 won but we only had 30,000 so he insisted we pay by card.

On the way he swiped my bank card, then showed me a receipt and said that the card hadn't been authorised and did we have any other way of paying. We tried another card and he said the same happened. We managed to scrape 32,000 won in cash and I paid the remaining 8,000 won with my T-Money card.

This morning we were talking about it and thought the whole thing was a little bit suspect, so I checked my bank balance and 90,000 won had been taken from my card, with some more money being taken from the other card. Looks like we have been completely scammed.

Has anyone else had this experience? A mate I was talking to today said a girl he knew had the same thing happen a year ago. Is there any recourse? Surely if the money had been taken from a card it can be traced right back to the cab by the bank? Is it worth making a police report?

Call the bank and reverse/dispute the transaction. If you have the receipts do you have the driver's no.? call the company and explain.

This happened to a student of mine a couple of years ago, but her bank sent a text message to her phone whenever her card was used so she was able to point out to the taxi driver that actually, the card had worked.

I immediately went to the bank and ask that they do the same thing (Shinhan btw). I never had to use it in a taxi, but it was useful sometimes when I couldn't remember how much I had used my card!

At least it won't happen again!

That's awful. Of course you should do something, can't you go to the bank and show them your receipt? You might get your money back, it's worth a try anyways. You can't just let him get away with it, also call the taxi company and complain.

Good luck!

Just to clarify, was it a regular taxi that you hailed....or was it one of those 5 or 6 cab drivers who are always parked outside the '7 eleven' trying to get people into their cabs?

This is common for taxi's to haggle prices with you just because youre a foreigner. Next time some idiot cab driver tries to tell you 30k, or any other price for a fare, tell him to USE THE ME'TUHHHH (meter). If he refuses laugh in his face and walk away.

This shit used to happen to me all the time when I first got to Korea. There is no reason why you can't find a taxi driver who doesn't haggle in Hongdae.

Yeah, just walk down the street away from the 7/11 and they'll do a u-turn as they drive past to get you. As for the people saying to wait for the subway...eff that. If you're by yourself, a love motel or jjimjilbang make sense, but with a group of four, a taxi is the best.

I'd definitely make a police report. I think this taxi driver is counting on you being a foreigner to get away with this crime. You used your card in his taxi. Tracking him down should be a no brainer. Just bring a Korean friend if you can. I had an issue with some money that had gone missing from an account I was looking after (long story). My gyopo friend and I went to the police station and they were really helpful and we had it sorted out within an hour. (Turned out my friend had taken most of the money out of her account before she left and not told me. I was having a heart attack thinking I'd somehow lost 10 million won of hers until the police took us to the bank and we checked the CCTV from when the withdrawals were). In any case, they were very happy to help.

Good luck. I hope you get your money back and the taxi driver loses his job.

Yes, it was always a breeze to get a taxi if you just walk down further towards Sangsu, literally an extra 50 feet of walking saves you 20k.

^THIS

I have the same service from my bank (it's free) and can come in handy for many reasons: wondering how much you spent the night before if you go out drinking, if your card gets stolen, buying movie or other tickets online at Korean websites can be tricky, if you get the text then you know it went through, etc

next time a cabbi insists on more cash up front than you have...get another taxi. Many taxi drivers will take you home for less. Usually the meter is the most reasonable route to take, that's why they want you to agree to pay more up front (so they can get more out of you).
