Here's some information about it ahead of time for newbies.

http://www.korea.net/detail.do?guid=45951
The civil defense exercise is aimed at preparing for a wide range of attacks and emergencies, such as bio-chemical attacks, nuclear accidents, and also terrorism. The exercise is held twice a year. On the day of the exercise, you will start to hear sirens go off at 2 oclock in the afternoon. All cars on the roads must stop, while civilians are asked to evacuate streets and head indoors or into shelters. The exercise lasts 20 minutes after which the second siren sounds and everything goes back to normal. Once again, the point of conducting these drills is to check the readiness of the nation for wars and unexpected emergencies.

Regular evacuation exercise: April 29 (Thu),14:00~14:20, Sirens / Evacuation and Traffic control

Thanks for the notice. I have been here for years and never known when to expect it. It was certainly confusing the first time it happened. Good to know ahead of time for a change.

The weirdest thing is I have been here for just shy of two years and have never heard this or experienced it. Do they do this everywhere? I live in Suwon by the way.

I always seem to be at work when it happens but one time, during a break, I was in Ilsan, near Juyeop Station/Grand Department Store with Korean friends when it went off. Everyone had to clear the streets. We waited inside the department store for a few minutes with a bunch of other people. Everyone seemed to be cooperative. In the event of an actual emergency, there's no way it would be that easy.

you can tell when one is coming a few days ahead of time because there will be white flags with green and yellow symbols on it on all the flagpoles along the main streets

Where I live we don't have the sirens, just guys with AK-47's and sniper rifles pointing at me as I drive to work Smile - Quite dangerous, not because of the gun, more the fact that i'm trying to spot 'wally' - or 'woldo' as you call him in the US. - they have some quality positions!

It's just when the 'newbies' wave at you, and you see the punishment they are about to get from their sergents. Not joking!!!!

The Seoul pussies quickly get drilled into rural army life! Smile

The sirens can be very loud. Listen for them at 2 pm and you should hear them.

Hey Wylies99 ??? I am right next to Jamsil and nothing happened today.

Our school played a small siren and the national anthem at 10am for one minutes silence for the "Cheonan victims"

But this afternoon (2pm etc) nothing happened - NO sirens etc

Sorry, that website lied. Maybe the Cheonan minute of silence preempted the sirens.
