So, I've been here over a week now, and I only have about 17,000 won left to my name. Today we are going to the hospital for my physical, etc. Then we will go to immigration. Then I guess I have to wait for my ARC card, then open a bank account, and then they can finally give me my 300,000 settlement allowance. Is there no way I can just get them to give it to me in cash? I am broke and need food, etc Sad

Explain your situation and ask them for it. My second or third day at my school they handed me a big wad of won, so it's not like it doesn't happen. I didn't even have to ask for it. That said, you do deserve a slap on the wrist for not bringing enough emergency money with you. No matter how broke you are back home, you still don't want to be landing halfway around the world with anything less than 500 bucks.

You'd have to ask them, but I've heard of other people getting it in cash. I'm sure if you explain your situation, they'll help you out. They're not going to let you starve... well, maybe... Wink

The day I came they gave me my settlement allowance in cash. It was in the school envelope. Explain the situation and add that you assumed it would be given to you the moment you settled in at your home.

my school gave me my settlement in pure cash money. Tell them you have no money whatsoever. Someone at the school will lend you some money if the settlement allowance isn't possible at this time

Sorry, I too went through that. I didn't get it until 1st payday. It took a month to get ARC. My 1st payday was 5 weeks after arrival which included my settlement allowance, airfare, and March salary. A tidy sum.

Turns out all I needed for a bank account was my passport, so this could have been done when I got here. *sigh* It's difficult when neither I nor the school know how to do things Laughing But alas, after signing my name 50 times on agreements I can't even read, finally got a bank account. Hopefully my settlement money will be there tomorrow. Now I just need to figure out where to buy hangers I can finally clean some clothes and hang them up to dry Razz
