The title is a bit misleading but I recently started playing RDR and am have a pretty good time.

Haven't played GTA IV yet but I'm itching to play it now. For anyone who's played it, are there random events like there are in RDR? For example, if I'm driving around in my whip, will stuff happen where I'll have an opportunity to intervene?

In RDR, you could be riding your horse on some highway and someone might be getting chased by animals. These kinds of events.

Aw hell, which do you think is better, RDR or GTA IV? Probably gonna get both GTA IV and Episodes from L.C.

I'm familiar with his work--was big with my friends a while back. Not really my cup of tea.

RDR's random events are way better than anything random in GTa. GTA has a good scripted story and a few "Stranger" missions but nothing like the random coach robberies, horse thefts or whatever.

I played the hell out of GTA and then never picked it up until the DLC came out. Then played those once and moved on. I've 100% RDR and am still playing it. Multiplayer is much better than GTA.

RDR for the win.

Exactly.

I have both and I went back to play a bit of GTA IV after almost finishing RDR and it's not even close to as fun. Different genres, sure, but I've literally spent hours in RDR doing nothing but random stranger quests, helping people being attacked by coyotes, duels, or lassoing and dragging horse thieves through towns and using them as live bait for bears.

The most time I've ever spent in GTA IV doing non quest stuff is when I spawn all the weapons and vehicles and just try to survive on six stars.

I loved the scenery and stuff, but I found it got dry after awhile. Come on...riding a horse and shooting...then riding a horse and lassoing. Mini-games can bite me...I'll play solitaire on Windows if I want that kind of gameplay.

Fun game, but I was happy to finish and wasn't inclined to do the side quests too much.

In GTA you can fly, ride motorcyles, trucks, sports cars, TANKS...you name it. You can shoot everything from a revolver to a rocket. RDR...horse and old gun. In GTA there is also more of an openness to the style of play. You can be really bad or kinda bad. In RDR its tough to be a real baddie and the missions don't lean that way. Artistically RDR outshines GTA, but GTA is much deeper and more varied...IMO.

Don't get me wrong, RDR was beautifully done and full of atmosphere (loved the sun shining over the horizon), but I think GTA is much cooler.

On a side note...I"m loving Assassin's Creed II! Even (especially) the side quests!

Amazing game through and through. The ending, and especially the last few missions were flat out awesome.

GTA IV was just ok IMO. Other than the updated graphics and physics...pretty standard GTA.

Other sandbox games I would recommend over GTA IV...in order:

Just Cause 2 - story sucks, but doesn't take itself too seriously like GTA. Much larger sandbox to play around in. Parachutes and a grappling gun...awesome.

Infamous - excellent game. Very linear but strong story.

Protype - similar to Infamous...story is weak but powers and overall action on a much bigger scale.

I probably shouldn't comment because I haven't played Red Dead yet..........but I think I prefer fast cars to horses......I just think GTA4 is insanely good fun.
