Greek myths and legends have always been familiar to most as many have heard of them since childhood.
And now Seoul residents have the opportunity to explore this more as 136 ancient Greek artifacts exclusively from the British Museum including star pieces like the 'Discus-thrower' have arrived in Seoul and are on display at the National Museum of Korea starting Saturday.
[Interview : Ian Jenkins, Senior Curator
The British Museum] "Everything in the exhibition is chosen to be a visual delight and an object to provoke intellectual interest because the Greeks were quintessentially both full of delight for the eye and delight for the mind."
The fourth world civilizations exhibition presented by the National Museum of Korea aims to introduce the values and views of the ancient Greeks and their expression of the human body in art.
The exhibition consists of four parts.
The first part named "Gods, Heroes and Outsiders" is composed of sculptures and images of Greek gods and mythological creatures such as the Sphinx, Zeus, Dionysus and Hercules.
Visitors can learn how ancient Greeks conceived of their deities as having human appearances and emotions.
The second, "The Human Form," highlights their physical ideals.
Until the 6th century B.C., Greek art depicted the human body in an abstract and simple way but starting from the 5th century B.C., bodies were expressed in more natural postures and artists focused more on the balance, rhythm and proportion of the body.
And the third part "Olympia and Athletics" examines the sanctuary of ancient Olympia home of the Olympic Games and presents art pieces of athletic competitions and athletes.
The last part, "Daily Life," shows the life of ancient Greeks from birth through adulthood as well as war, death and desire.
[Interview : Choe Kwang-shik, Director-General
The National Museum of Korea] "The exhibition is a chance to see the Greek characters and people we have only heard of through myths. I think the exhibition will be more interesting if we think about the thoughts and the philosophy they had."
The exhibition will be held until August 29th serving as an invaluable opportunity for city residents to enjoy and explore the culture of the ancient Greeks in Seoul.

| Really? The Townley Discobolus is in Korea! Well, let's learn about Greece in a day by taking a day trip to Seoul. Hope there aren't too many Koreans elbow to elbow for this exhibit. |
