or at least the University of Ottawa for violating Ann Coulter's First Amendment right to free speech. The University is attempting to gag the poor woman before she even opens her mouth. For shame.

Personally, I've always wondered about the legality of revoking a vile American's passport while they are abroad so they can't come back...just leave them a stateless person wandering the earth, kinda like the guy in 'The Man Without a Country'.

Philosophically, I don't agree with them for doing this.

However, the first amendment doesn't mean anything to them since it's in the US Constitution. They can violate it if they want to.

She has a right to comply with Canadian laws. Or not go there.

I don't know why a university wants this dingbat speaking on their campus anyway. I suppose Ahmadinejad was invited to speak in the states.

While I philisophically don't agree with limiting freedom of speech-- It'd sure be nice if she suffered the same fate as that Ernest Zundel fella.

That woman turns my stomach every time she opens her mouth.

Nobody has the right to free speech on private property though?

I think a good argument can be made that 'hate speech' should be legal but 'incitement to violence' is where the line is crossed.

Or some people would argue you could incite all you want.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives everyone in Canada the right to free speech. However, there are limits on that freedom. For instance, you couldn't yell "fire" in a movie theater and expect to not be charged. Likewise, hate speech is illegal and not covered by this law.

This most likely fits under the Trespass to Property Act (think that was the name) where private or public institutions can tell you to leave if they see fit. People seem to think a university is a public place. It isn't.

One of my many pet peeves is UK or US individuals bringing their ideological baggage into Canada. I strongly dislike the post-colonial obsessives from the UK and liberal creationists from the US. Despite the emotional satisfaction I get form seeing AC being rejected, it is none the less totally inappropriate for her to be warned that a deviation from Canadian political correctness is potentially a criminal offense.

Well I thought the warning was actually a favour, Coulter may literally not have known about the difference in laws.

I suppose you're against any restrictions on speech whatsoever Mises?

It's inappropriate to warn someone about breaking the laws of another country?

Not that I agree with said laws...but when you go to another country you are expected to comply with their laws...no matter how stupid they may be.

This is exactly the type of speech which needs to be defended.

So she didn't speak. The police couldn't guarantee her safety. What was the OP saying about political violence?

This is fine. Canadian laws are different from American laws, but its a free state with a different understanding of freedom of expression. Coulter was merely forewarned, not threatened in any way.

And then Coulter canceled because apparently she's a big baby.

I'm actually still a student at U of O.

Basically the University and Police asked if her people could find a bigger venue because there were loads more people wanting to go and see her.

Basically if they didn't find a bigger place there would be lots of people waiting outside for her and the police were a little worried about this. Nothing they couldn't handle though.

All the police and U of O did were to suggest she finds a bigger venue. So she decided to cancel and make a big PR stunt out of it.

So guess what? Her PR people decide to give her more PR. They say the U of O cancelled her because of her views and that it is against her freedom of speech. Again as someone above mentioned. We have freedom of speech but there are limits.

In Canada you cannot go around yelling hate. In America you can. Just look at people like the KKK.
