Posting this again because Gizmo has updated his editor's picks. I love this site and it's a must have for new and experienced users alike. I have 25 years of PC experience and I agree with 90% of his freeware picks.
No longer will you feel the need to ask you geek-friend about what software to use. No longer will you have to endure his withering gaze, and baleful sigh. Just go here:

Sorry if this seems like an ad, but I plug this guy because he really does care and puts a concerted effort into finding the best freeware out there, so you don't have to.
Also, if you click "review" next to the software title you can get in depth information and comments from other users.
