Here's the situation:

My boyfriend and I work at a public elementary school. Our contract states that our monthly salary is 2.5 million won. We started our jobs on April 7th and were paid on April 30th. We each were paid 1.5 million won. We assumed that the 1 million won difference was due to missing the first 4 work days in April, as well as taxes and the deposit on our apartment (which we were told would be 300,000 won a piece). However, today we received pay stubs and they didn't take anything out of our checks- no taxes, no deposits. But 4 working days ( or 1 week, if payment isn't calculated by work days) wouldn't add up to 1 million won. I asked my co-teacher to ask the payroll woman about it, and she reported back that out of 30 days in April we had only worked 18 so that's why 1 million won was missing. But I don't understand- how can she calculate our pay based on only the days we worked OUT OF total days in April? Shouldn't be total days we worked out of total working days? So 18 out of 22? Or the other way to do it would be to say that out of 30 days in April, we were here for 24?

I just don't see how, if they didn't take ANYTHING out of our checks, the amount we were paid is 1 million won less than our salary. I don't make a million won a week.

Help, anyone?

Do this: Hold up ten fingers and say "How many fingers do I have?" They will say 10. Then count, say, okay 10, right? Ready, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then on the other hand go 10, 9, 8, 7, 6. And what's 5+6? 11.

They made a mistake. Keep going back there until it's fixed.

My co-teacher passed on the message that if we have a better way to calculate pay then we can share our ideas and the process can be changed "starting next month. Not this month." Is she really trying to tell me that we're supposed to shrug away 500,000 won EACH? We'll keep pressing the issue, but damn... I really don't want to go through another battle with these people. We JUST got them to fix our busted drain after a whole month of not being able to use the washing machine or wash dishes.

I really don't want to spend so much time harping and complaining. Especially cause they're always talking about how the last teacher was such acomplainer. Now I'm wondering if this is why!

Well, don't work for free. Go down to the payroll office and sit there with your co-teacher until you get paid. If classes start, tell them you're not sure you'll be paid for working, so why should you work? You gotta keep going back there.

We just spoke with the manager. Most of the talking was in Korean, but I heard the numbers 18, 22, 24 and 30 and I showed them my calculations. The manager seemed to follow the math. She is going to make the payroll woman fix the situation "within the week" and give us our 500,000 won each, with the deposit coming out of next month's check.

It really didn't have to be this complicated in he first place.
