I'm looking at taking the ferry back to Korea from Sakaiminato this summer (I live in Donghae, so it's more convenient for me than the Beetle out of Busan.)
Have any of you taken this ferry, and if so, how was it?
Is there anything worth checking out in the area around Sakaiminato?

Thanks

Never taken that ferry, but I've been to that area of Japan a few times.

It is in a pretty isolated area of Japan and there's no real major city less than 3 hours away by road or rail. I realise it's convenient if you live in Donghae, but is it really convenient for where you'll be in Japan?

There's really not much to do in the immediate area of Sakaiminato. However, it's quite close to Matsue, the capital of the neighbouring prefecture, Shimane. Matsue is quite a nice, quaint city with an impressive castle and a few other historical buildings. You can also take a boat trip on Lake Shinji, the lagoon to the west of the city.

To get to Matsue from Sakaiminato, you can either take a direct bus, or take the train - either direct or you may have to transfer at Yonago.

Thanks for the info.
I used to live in Okayama, so I've spent a lot time around Okayama prefecture, and a bit of time up in Shimane and Tottori prefectures. I really liked it up there and I'll be visiting some friends in Okayama city, so it's actually more convenient than Busan-Fukuoka for me.

Ah ok, to Okayama that would make sense.

There's also a ferry to Shimonoseki from Busan. There used to be one to Hiroshima too, but I'm not sure if that's still running.
