How are netbooks performance when it comes to HD video like Youtube and .H264 1080p?

My classroom laptop is like 5 years old and stutters on regular youtube video. Just wondering if a Netbook would be good enough to output HD video on the classroom Plasma HDTV without any hiccups when running full screen.

This question maily applies to the N4** series Netbook Atom processors. I have a Dell 1010NR with a N2** series ATOM and it can't handle HD video full screen.

I think decompression of videos of those resolutions starts to depend on graphics card as much a processor. In which case you would probably need a netbook with something other than an Intel GMA. There are a few out there with ATI and NVIDIA chips (the 9400M and the 3200HD(?)) which are supposed to be able to output 1080p vids comfortably if you have the TV to take them

YouTube is the Achilles heal of the Atom. It's actually possible to get HD video to run on the old 220Atom with the coreavc codecs. You have to pay for them though. About 12 bucks Us. But it won't do HD YouTube.

I just bought an nvidia Ion nettop and am having no end of trouble with it. It struggles with Hd. Out of sync sound and jerky panning. I'm 2 mins away from sending it back. It is meant to be able play 1080 YouTube but I haven't tried it. Will try now and get back to you.

Just tried 1080 youtube video on my Atom 330 nvidia Ion chipset and it works really well. It played 720 flawlessly but stuttered over 1080, so I installed the flash 10.1 beta plugin and it worked fine. Keep in mind that my set up is a "nettop", but considering it has identical parts as the nvidia powered net books, you should be OK.

Just go and try it out in the store.

At this moment, with the current chips, the 10'' netbook form-factor which allows such amazing battery life and portability is not guaranteed to do tasks such as 1080p TV-out. The processing power just isn't there. Something has to give if you want that kind of battery-life.

That's the situation in May 2010......that will change pretty soon. I predict 10'' netbooks will do just fine in all departments except gaming in about 6 months to 1 year

Senior, have you tried using Media Player Classic Homecinema and enabling the DXVA support?
http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
This will divert the processing workload from your Atom (which needs some diverting) and share the workload with the ION chipset. Your nettop should do 1080p this way.

Thanks. Will give it a try. I'm usuallly pretty savvy with this stuff, but it just isn't working for me. I figured VLC or xmbc would work right out of the box, but nope. Honestly, I think if it says "1080p" on the box, it really should work with Windows Media Player. How is a non tech person supposed to get it to work, if someone who knows something about computers can't get it to work?

The tech guys at Zotac Korea said to use Gom player o KM player.

I owe you big time Eamo. I've been trying to get it to work for two weeks now, and finally something works. Unbelievable.

I have no idea why none of Gom, VLC or KMPlayer would do it. They also suggested DaumPot but I will be screwed if I'm going to infest my brand new computer with Korean crapware.

Cheers again. Surprised

Unless you have (can afford) this 11" netbook: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/alienware-m11x/4505-3121_7-33954404.html?tag=mncol;lst;1

Anyone know where I can get a Broadcom Crystal HD in Korea? If I replaced the internal Wificard with this, I think non-ION netbook can play HD content.

That's a cool little machine. I guess they could shoehorn decent graphics into a netbook right now if enough people would buy it.......but I don't know if many people would buy a netbook for gaming.

My stance on netbooks is pretty clear. If you only need to do what they do, and you don't mind the small screen, then fine.

But unless you need extreme portability, I don't see what's so burdensome about a 6lb 15'' full-powered laptop.

The 1201N with the 9400 is almost viable for gaming. It's not going blast out 60 fps in modern games, but it will run the majority of them once you turn most the levels down low

More and more I am researching netbooks, the more and more I think they are a huge ripoff.

An Asus 1201N in Korea is over 600,000w.

My Thinkpad T60, despite being a couple years old, still smokes the hell out of any Netbook out there. I bought the thing used on eBay for like $400 bucks.

They are selling not for $300 Buy It Now.

Suffice to say, my school will only budget me around 400,000-500,000w to replace the ancient laptop in my classroom.

Looking around, there are no Netbooks within that price range that can playback 720p or 1080p content. Even the Netbooks that can playback 720p can't handle Youtube 720p (Flash 10.1).

Kinda disappointed now. I was looking to upgrade my classroom laptop, but the very thing I'm looking for, an ION netbook, is way out of the price range.

I'd gladly buy the Thinkpad T60 for the classroom, but my school can't purchase the computer via eBay or any other US site. For some odd reason, they can only purchase it from an "authorized" seller in Korea.

Just like you can't compare prices between the US and Korea, you really can't compare netbooks and laptops. They are two separate categories of machine. You absolutely do not buy a netbook for processing power or gaming ability. They are for portability and battery life. For the price of a high-end netbook, you can get a cheap laptop that will destroy the netbook in processing power. The laptop will probably have a much shorter battery life and be less portable, though. Everything is a series of compromises.
