Two middle-aged men from Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, died after drinking a cup of "makgeolli," traditional milky rice liquor, police said Monday.
Police have opened an investigation after distraught family members raised the allegation that toxic materials were found in blood tests taken from the deceased. Postmortems will be conducted to confirm the cause of death, police added.
According to the Suwon police, the two men - a 49-year-old with the last name Cho and a 41-year-old surnamed Lee - collapsed after drinking only half of a cup of bottled makgeolli Lee brought to Cho's house at 11:30 a.m. Friday. They were immediately taken to hospital, but died shortly afterwards, police said.
The bottle label indicated that the shelf life of the wine had expired by nearly one month, said an officer familiar with the case. It's uncertain if they were aware that the drink was passed its sell by date. Cho's wife told police, "They shared just half of the bottle of makgeolli. They complained that it was too acidic to drink, stopped and soon after they collapsed."
An investigation is underway to see if toxic materials could have been mixed in with the makgeolli and why they drank the makgeolli when it was past its expiry date. "We don't rule out the possibility that they were killed," the officer said.

Its not the first time - the same thing has happened a couple of times in the past.
Basically makgeolli should be drank the same day that you buy it - it has a very short-fridge life - usually no good within 1 week.
It is very important to keep the Makgeolli at the correct emperature:
Keeping the yeast alive is important. Keep makgeolli at a temperature of about 5 degrees Celsius or lower. "You can drink it again after you have opened it. Makgeolli can last from five to even 10 days after it has been made if you keep it at the right temperature,'' Yoon said.
If you leave it for one month - it forms an acidic acid and all you need is to drink a cup of it, wait 30 minutes and you should be dead. |

I had to laugh at that one as well.
Probably what he meant was "acetic" acid, but I don't think that a fermented drink would produce enough of it to kill you. It's basically vinegar. The drink would have to be extremely foul tasting for it to be concentrated enough to kill you (in which case the acid would burn your mouth before poisoning you). Most likely you'd vomit up the makgeolli (or what ever other home brew). Even the smell of it would be repulsive. I've brewed beer, wine and even a makgeolli (i tried at least). The sometimes it gets contaminated and goes sour but it wasn't lethal.
What is more likely to make you sick is lactic acid. This is a common part of (improperly?) home brewed beers. I say "improperly" because modern beer drinkers don't like lactic acid in beer, but that's only a more modern development in the last 200 years. Too much lactic acid though, will likely make you sick (although I'm not sure if it will cause you to drop dead after 30 minutes). Again, I think that you'd be repulsed by the taste of the drink if it had THAT much lactic acid in it.
I think that I'm going to go with the family on this one. I think there's a chance that the two guys were poisoned by something other than the makgeolli. Or that that makgeolli was laced with something. |

Dang, I'm definitely not touching any of these bottles here. I didn't like any of it anyhow when I tried it. Talk about low quality. |

Thankfully the taste of normal, untainted makgeolli is repugnant enough to keep me away... but I've recently started acquiring a taste for 동동주. Does that have similar food-poisoning-related dangers? |

Oh, come on. These guys were poisoned by someone. There is no food product on the market that turns from perfectly safe drink to INSTANT DEATH POISON in 7 days. Think about this. |

I didn't want to chime in with exactly what you just said, just in case this whole thread is some sort of meta joke, that only the posters on this thread are in on.
It's pretty obvious there is more going on here than week old rice juice kills you instantly. |
