So, I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

I am currently working under SMOE (8/2009-8/2010 contract) at a pretty amazing high school. I love my faculty and students and generally have no problems. Initially, I was planning on renewing for a 2nd year. HOWEVER, I've been recently looking into graduate schools and found that I may be applying for USC's Masters in Teaching program in September 2010. The application deadline is July 26, 2010 and I'd find out my admission decision sometime between then and mid-August.

Now, my problem is that I need to submit my renewal form by 5/20 and participate in an evaluation/open classroom lesson sometime in June. Obviously, I don't know if I'm going to get into graduate school, so I don't want to tell my school "no" to the renewal. So, my question is what would happen if I got into graduate school with prior agreement to my renewal and cancel on my 2nd contract sometime in mid-August. Now, this is, of course, before the start of my 2nd contract, so I would think that it wouldn't really present any issues other than that my school may be a bit bitter.

So, I was wondering, under the SMOE contract, if I canceled my renewal/2nd contract BEFORE the start of the 2nd contract, will I be able to receive my usual exit allowance, severance pay, and one-month extra pay from my 1st contract? Thank you.

Just looking a tad bit further into the future....Will you be needing any references from this "amazing" school you'll be leaving without a teacher?
