I taught in Korea for 3 years. About halfway through is when they started making the crim check necessary. I got one done just by sending my finger prints and stuff off to the FBI and it came back clean and that was all there was too it.
I'm looking for new work (after traveling for a few months) and schools and recruiters are telling me I have to get it apostillized? I thought that was only for the Canadians (I'm American). What does this mean exactly? Is a record from the FBI not good enough? I can't get any of the recruiters to give me any more detail.
I had planned to just head back to Korea after traveling Asia. I really can't afford to go all the way back to the states just to get this thing signed by someone. Can I get someone else to do it for me back home?
This is really starting to stress me out. Funds are tight and a million won flight to America is just not in the budget.
Help. |

Actually, Canadians are exempt from the apostille (Canada is not a signatory of the treaty). They have other hoops to jump through.
As an American you can get your CBC done and then go to the US embassy and swear an affidavit of authenticity and K-immi will accept that in place of the apostille.

Do I have to get the FBI check done or can I get one from my home state? The statewide one only takes a week or so. The FBI one significantly longer. |

Home state is fine. You do NOT need to get the FBI one done.

Should I get one if I lived in another state (for university)?
Thanks for your help ttompatz. As soon as I tell a recruiter I'm not in America or Korea at the moment, they immediately start to ignore me. It's like working two years at one the top elementary schools in the country means nothing. |

You only need 1 CBC from your home country.
For Americans it doesn't even matter which state or if you were ever resident.
It must have either:
a) apostille
b) embassy certification (if you are not in your home country).

Heads up: yesterday, immigration made me show proof that I am "from" the state where I got the CBC. This may be something that they are tightening up on. |

Should be, knock on wood. If not, I'll drop a line and let you know after I get settled in Taiwan. Bottom line, I wouldn't be getting one from a random state although in the past that was apparently ok. |

ttompatz is dead right... i got a state of florida one done, went to the embassy in seoul, waited 20 min.s, and was outta there... immi took it no problem...
one word of advice... get two and get them both certified at the embassy.. one for you to keep (they're valid for a few months), and one to give to immi... just backup in case one is lost... |

I'm from Minnesota and I requested mine through the mail. I sent an envelope requesting a copy of my CRC with two copied forms of ID along with a self-addressed-stamped envelope to the MN Secretary of State. Inside the SASE envelope to the Sec of State was a separate letter explaining my situation, requesting apostille for each CRC and with another SASE envelope to my address in the States. I got the CRCs with apostille no problem in maybe 2 or 3 weeks and then promptly forwarded them to myself in Korea.
Sounds like a hassle but I didn't have to go to the embassy - all I had to do was wait a little while extra. The fees weren't bad, either - $8 for each CRC and $5 for each apostille.
How much are the fees at the Embassy to have a CRC verified? |

IMPORTANT INFO FOR UK applicants; just got this reply from the FCO who apostille (legalise) DOCUMENTS FROM ABROAD:
National identification Certificates, Association of Chief Police Officer certificates and Disclosure documents
Original disclosure documents must be signed by a member of the Criminal Records Bureau or a practising UK solicitor or notary public before they can be legalised. We cannot legalise photocopies of these documents under any circumstances.
Please visit our website at www.fco.gov.uk and select legalisation from the quick links, then look under documents we can legalise for further details regarding legalising your document. |

Has anyone ACTUALLY done this in Seoul? I am in The Philippines and have a Pennsylvania CRC accomplished but going to PA is out of the question. |

Every American who was in Korea at the time of the change had to do it (rather than return home for it).
Since you are in a 3rd country it is also an option for you; going to the US embassy in Manila and swearing an affidavit of authenticity and having that attached to the CRC in place of the apostille.
BE AWARE that the CRC MUST BE less than 6 months old at the time you submit it to immigration or it will be refused.
