|
|
I've been in Korea for three years. I've heard a few cliches about the viewpoints of Koreans from expats that I haven't heard from Koreans directly. Off the top of my head:
1. "Kimchi cures everything."
2. "There are no gays in Korea."
3. "All foreigners have AIDs."
There are instances when Koreans may have expressed these viewpoints. I think these are individual viewpoints and not indicative of Korean society as a whole.
These cliches have taken on a life of their own, and they are funny, but they are not proven.
So, what cliches about Koreans attitudes towards foreigners do you have? |

Foreigners make stuff up so they can apppear better than Koreans. Usually on a site like this - for juvenile "venting" reasons.
I also have never heard 1 or 2 from the mouth of a Korean, just a disgusted foreigner. I think they hear these either as a joke, or from children and take them to be truth, never bothering to check. |

I'm not in disagreement with the idea of the thread, but I've heard variations on the first one and definitely heard the second one a number of times (but that was a long time ago). |

I'd say all three of those cliches exist in the minds of Koreans to wildly varying degrees from 'not at all true' to 'probably true'. |

I think that some will believe these (Koreans that is) and most of these are children, or parents who are just trying to make their kids like Korea more^^* I don't think they should be taken seriously though - especially when told to us. |

I have also heard the first two. These came from the mouths of Korean adults, not expats. |

I was chatting with my KT about friends and diversity, and she didn't believe that I had Korean lesbian friends here. I had to explain that, because of the culture, they have to keep their romantic lives private to most, and only really open up to foreigners (and even then, only a select few).
They may not think we ALL have AIDS, but they screen us all. Once would be fine, but they make us take the damned test every year. I'm all for HIV tests for all, but it would have to be for ALL, and not just the barbarians who don't hit their students. |

I've not heard the first one exactly as quoted here but have been told numerous times by adult Koreans that Kimchi prevents/cures illness x. These have included SARS, Avian flu, and HIV/AIDS.
I've also had at least 3 Korean adults tell me that when I see Korean males arm in arm I shouldn't think they are gay (I didn't) because there aren't any gays in Korea. Additionally a Korean co-worker told me the reason he stayed with his physically abusive, married boyfriend was because there weren't any other gay Korean men in Daegu.
All foreigners having AIDS is something I haven't heard any Korean say directly, but I have been turned away from donating blood every single time I've tried - with no prelim testing for anemia, questionnaire for malaria or Mad Cow exposure risks or any reason given. |

Let's think here...Perhaps Koreans see Kimchi like this-
"An Apple a day keeps the doctor away"
"Chicken Soup for your cold"
Just a thought. Things don't translate perfectly.
Then again you get people who claim that a BK Double Stack is better for you than a bowl of white rice.
Back on topic- I think the Koreans believing in Fan Death is real, well at least to the bumpkins. |

Not commenting on the validity (or lack thereof) of any of the kimchi/apple cliches - just stating that, contrary to the OP's position, I've heard them from adult Koreans. |

OMG the one that pisses me off the most is when during a sales pitch, they go
"you don't want that made in china shit... bad quality"
i'm a chinese canadian and technically, I"M made in china
and mannnn that shit pisses me off
and they also think all chinese people are dirty and poor. i mean ALL of them. when i tell them i'm chinese, they say "no, that's impossible! you're korean"
i'd like to think it's cuz i'm 6'1" and pretty buff with a sexy jawline and perfect skin and all the chinese people they see work in restaurants or factories in ansan city, where i live
but damn, i get pissy!!! especially when shopping for shoes
"MADE IN KOREA! NOT CHINA! 40,000WON!" |

Get rid of the bun, and you would be right. A grilled ground beef patty, cheese, onions etc. Fine.
A bowl of rice=insulin spike. |

Nah...a good percentage of them believe it, well educated people too. I give a fan death lecture (last one before summer...I know I'm an ass) and usually 10-20% of my students think it's true. |

1. "Kimchi cures everything." |
Heard that one a few times from Korean friends or members of my wifes family, usually they are the older folks. That falls in line with what my grandfather used to say...he too had many sayings he preached as gospel.
Quote: |
2. "There are no gays in Korea." |
That needs to be explained. In my experience, no Koreans think there are no homosexuals in Korea. However, they are not confortable discussing that topic and hence will try to end the discussion with the quote saying above. Quite the distinction and this is especially true if the discussion is in a group setting and involves foreigners. Not that hard to figure out once you understand a bit of Korean culture.
Quote: |
3. "All foreigners have AIDs." |
Never heard that one. Some Koreans may think that, in the same sense that many people blamed Africans for AIDS when it started cropping up in North America, then they called it the gay disease....and so on.
Some Koreans react the same way to that disease: blame the outside world.
I have heard other clichs....
1- Foreigners are lazy.
This tends to be because of the different approach to work and the perception it creates (often an innacurate perception but also often quite accurate!).
2- Foreigners think only of themselves
This is voiced sometimes, it is clearly the result of a collective vs individualistic mindset. Again, warped perceptions play a role and the behavior of some foreigners fuels the image.
In general the clichs mentionned by the OP, along with many others are more widely spread by foreigners when commenting on what they think Koreans think based on limited and highly personal experiences. That is the ole I met one Korean who said this so they all think this mentality. |

blah, blah, blah.
The kimchi one like another poster said it's probably more on the line of apple and chicken noodle soup. Still makes me chuckle.
The 2nd one I have heard many variations from high school students to 60 year old adults and all ages in between. They truly believe (a good portion) of them that being gay is a choice and Koreans are just better than foreigners and don't make that choice. A co-worker of mine (ultra-religious mind you) asked me once why so many Americans were gay. I just answered well that's how they were born, and it's not so many. She answered with a very typical Christian response (the same one you'd find in any other country though) Oh I really think it's a choice, maybe to be popular?
Also never heard the AIDS one.
My ex-girlfriend asked me once if I had ever been to jail, because she "heard" that all Americans spend time in jail. ?!?
Fan Death -- 3/6 Korean teachers in my small hagwon believe it. Not so much that it'll kill you, but make you sick and COULD. All 6 think that it's unhealthy and they got very concerned when I told them I sleep with a fan on EVERY night.
As for the banana man that says we're immature or juvenile.....just stop. I know you're perfect, but just leave us alone. Let us poke fun at things. Sorry, you're not perfect, because you don't have a sense of humor. But I did hear a Korean say you took a dump and it smelled like roses. |
