Hi all,

I had been very seriously considering teaching English in Korea, however just recently I ran into a bit of (very stupid) trouble with the law. It appears that I may have a misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia and/or unsupervised probationary period on my record.

I understand, at least through recruiters, that a criminal check is required. Can anyone tell me how/if this will affect my ability to get a visa and teach overseas? Any insight or guidance would be very much appreciated.

You must produce a CLEAN background check to get hired- no exceptions.

I have an arrest in my home state. I got a CRC from a different state and it worked just fine. It didn't matter to anyone that it wasn't from my state of residence.

Did everyone get a CRC from every state they lived in for more than six months? I saw that requirement and am finding it difficult to contact all the state departments...

1 CRC from one state (doesn't have to be your state of residence).

Are you sure?

Those who have lived in multiple states after the age of 18 must submit a CRC from each state they have resided in for a period of six months or longer. Only the CRC from the applicants current state requires an apostille.

How would anyone know what states you've lived in unless you told them?

Yup.... I'm sure... it is an immigration issue and they have no way to know or check anyway.

Hmmmm

If the applicant's university is in a different state than the state of his/her CRC, someone might notice something there...

Wow, its a good thing I joined this forum... I was just about to start hunting down court houses for three states... I asked a recruiter and the some one from the Korean consulate for feedback, but I only got very brief answers that were very unclear... Thank you so much...

ROTFLMAO !!!!

They do about 2500 applications or more per month (100 or more per work day) and most of the clerks doing the confirmation numbers can't speak English and have no idea what state any given University is in or even what the individual states are never mind what cities are in what states.

No, they are not likely to notice.

The only problem arises when you have to go to the state capital for the apostille if you are from out-of-state. Could be a long drive if you are coming from Alaska or Hawaii.

I did everything by mail. It took a few phone calls and some planning but I mailed in my CRC request and had it forwarded on to the office where it was notarized then on to the Dept. of State for the apostille. It was kind of a pain but much better than driving the 4 hours to the state capitol.

Wow, 710, can't believe you actually believed that you would need a CRC from every state that you ever lived in Smile . I mean, could you imagine the expense(fingerprinting, cost of CBC, apostilles, mailing) involved for someone that has lived in so many places(ie like me). It would be pretty high and if Korea required such a thing, it would further deplete their pool of teachers(even though the economy back home is reeling). But as a previous poster stated, Koreans can't even keep track of our documents and keep having us repeat the same procedures over and over. How then would they ever be organized enough to know where we've lived and what we've done in our lives? Answer: they wouldn't. And, as was stated, they can't speak a lick of English, so it is all moot anyway.

Well its stated on the website... Just the current residence CRC must be apostilled... Im just glad to see it isnt enforced... There is so much information out there, a lot of it conflicting, it is hard to know what is correct... Especially when youre in a rush to get things done...
