Can't say I was a huge fan, but he was defintiely someone I was aware of as being the definitive artist in a particular genre, known among my friends as "Boogie Van art". Whatever you think about what he did, he certainly did do it well.

It's times like this that I really wish we were still allowed to post pictures directly onto a thread. I'm gonna choose this illustration for my tribute, since it's got all the quintessential Boogie Van elements: the muscular hero with the phallic sword, the scantily-clad female, the defeated monster, and the planets looming in the sky.

But his cover art for the Molly Hatchet album desreves mention as his most recognizable piece, at least for my generation.

Anyway, a sincere, non-kitschy RIP.

Ya know, a lot of people won't know his name, may not even know of Molly Hatchet, but they will recognize his paintings.

Perhaps this is condescending to his genre, but I always viewed his work as "applied art" in the same way that I view feature writing as "applied literature." I mean, for both of these modes, not necessarily that they aren't art, but that they are also of greater quality and value than the typical commercial illustrations and journalism.

He's certainly left an aesthetic mark on American popular culture in the 20th century, especially among fans of fantasy, mythology, and science fiction. His images are coveted from nerds to bikers. That's impressive in my book. Smile
