Assuming you know IPA, it's really more of a spelling test. I have no idea how to spell xylophone. Also, any American will say ˈzaɪ.lə.ˌfoʊn and not ˈzaɪ.lə.ˌfəʊn.

Agree about the spelling aspect of the quiz - and typing skills help, too. Withˈzaɪ.lə.ˌfoʊn / ˈzaɪ.lə.ˌfəʊn, at least the stress is in the same place, and /ˈzaɪ.lə/ is an unusual start to a word, so you would figure out it must be xylophone before getting confused by the diphthong, wouldn't you? I'm not a N.Am speaker, but I'd definitely say /əʊ/, too. I can't imagine who would say 'xylophown' (as in allow)

EDIT: I see you wrote that you do pronounce it /ˈzaɪ.lə.ˌfoʊn/. I'm assuming that your /oʊ/ is what I would transcribe as /aʊ/. What IPA typing do you use? I use this one: http://ipa.typeit.org/

It's the same alphabet, but British people pronounce it differently. Most dialectal difference is phonemic or phonetic. For instance, I say /pɪn/ and /pin/ the same way and /kɔt/ and /kɑt/ the same way. About 1/3 of Americans do. But in NY, /kɑt/ sounds like cawt, and many dialects make distinctions where I do not.
