I'm planning on heading to Eastern Europe and would appreciate any info costs/travel ideas/ accomodation tips etc from anyone who has been there. My general plan is fly into Istanbul and from there go: Bulgaria-Romania and up to Czech Rep. then back down along the coast: Croatia /Albania and fly out from Isatnabul. I will have 7-8 weeks for the trip.

There are night buses which run both ways between Istanbul and Sofia. There are many running every night - no need to book in advance I think. It cost around $50 one way.

They were much faster than the train, but you know, not so comfortable being as you're sitting on a bus all night.

You could try booking bargain airline tickets for you trip. The European bargain airlines can do most routes 1-way for < $50. Ryain and EasyJet are the two largest bargain carriers. Both have route maps available on their website.

when in doubt....ryanair!! i'm guessing you are from new zealand?? but you might have a European passport too, I know quite a few kiwis and aussies do!!

European citizens (or those resident in europe for 6 months) can get an interail pass to use on trains in 30 countries in Europe. a one month pass costs �399 if you are 25 or under, 599 if you are older than 25.

There is a boat from Istanbul to Odessa. I think it is around a hundred bucks. There are then really cheap overnight trains to Kiev, Kiev to Lvov/Warsaw. Alternatively, you could go south to Antalya (a nice Turkish beach resort) and from there fly around with wizzair. www.wizzair.com

Great, thanks for the tips. Yes I'm from NZ and don't have a european passport but I'll have a look at the website ..thanks. I'm probably going to save Russia / Ukraine / Poland for another trip or trips and stick with the other parts of Eastern Europe. I'm not sure how long i'm staying in Turkey but will check out that place if I have time. Any accomodation or things to see tips for Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech, Croatia, and Albania?
