|
Hey-
Is anyone doing the American TESOL Institute's special Thailand/Korea project, or going to Thailand with American Tesol this summer?
Just seeing if anyone else is going and make we could talk. My best friend and I are going to Chiang Mai, Thailand from late July to August and then teaching in Korea for a year. Hopefully someone else out there is going too!!! |

If you go to the below website it will give you all the information you could ever need! I found the link on the Korean Job Board forum. It's the very first link centered on the page.

Let me know if you plan on doing it! A friend and I are both going! |

You DO realize that for less money out of your pocket you can get a TESOL certificate, spend your time on the beach (or in the mountains) of Thailand then fly here and get the same job but earn $200-400 per MONTH more over the course of your year?
By going through them in this program you WILL lose about $5000 over your first year.
Do it yourself.
A good course (in class) from an accredited school runs about $500-800.
Salaries in Korea for an inexperienced TESOL certified teacher run about 2.2 -2.4 million won ($1950-2150) PLUS rent free apartment, medical, pension, severance, TWO WAY airfare (home-Korea-home).
What they don't tell you is that you may very well be required to have a consular interview in YOUR HOME COUNTRY prior to your E2 (teachers visa) being issued by Korea.
Sounds like there will be some UNHAPPY tesol grads in the near future.

I'm going through EPIK with the American Tesol Institute Program. EPIK is a government run program, and I've done quite a bit of research through it. I'd much rather work in a government public school and have the job security than make a bit more money and work in a hagwon. |

ttom is right.....you're losing out. I've only come across one friend out of the 10 here who are unhappy with their hagwon...I love mine in fact. I know a couple people making 2.6 their first year and have 2 months off for traveling in the summer and 3 weeks in winter for vacation as well.
Don't need the program or certificate...even working for the public school thru GEPIK, etc. |
