I just spoke with someone whose school wants him to work 28 hours a week instead of 22. They said he had to, and got the VP, Principal, and Head Teacher to all swarm him at lunch and pressure him into signing. So, he signed.
If your school demands that you sign something, don't sign it. You don't have to agree to anything else that's not in your contract. Doesn't matter how much they pressure you. They could have the President of Korea there, it doesn't matter. You don't have to sign!
They can't fire you for not doing something outside of your contract. Read your contract, know your rights. If you're unsure, ask someone else, but don't agree just because of the pressure and their sense of urgency. |

I did 27 in exchange for overtime pay. If they are willing to pay more, then I highly suggest agreeing to it and signing it.
If they ask you to teach overtime classes here and there, then they are more likely to hold pay and tell you not to work as many hours the following week.
By agreeing to more hours upfront, you are ensuring that you have that overtime money coming with your monthly salary. |

Some public school contracts say that you can be asked to work up to six hours of OT per week. Not saying that's the case with your friend's contract...just saying. |

The key word is "asked." |

From the GEPIK contract 2010
"Employee shall/may be asked to teach 6 extra hours within and/or out of the regular working hours.
Extra teaching should not exceed 6 hours per week without the Employee's consent."
Seem fairly clear that "asked"=required. At least in their minds. Your consent is required for MORE than six additional hours but it says nothing about your consent up to or less than six additional hours.
Also keep in mind until you have worked at least six months you are not entitled to protection from arbitrary firing. |

Forgot to mention the key part: the six hours were during regular class time, and were not paid overtime. |

What happens if you say "NO" to over-time? Do they make your life hell? |

You cannot be that much of an idiot. That had to be your try at humor....it is impossible that you are actually serious with this comparison. If you are I pity you. |

It doesn't matter. If his contract says he works 22 hours and he works 22 hours, then those extra six hours are paid at the OT rate. He may not be able to refuse them, but he is entitled to ask for the OT rate. |

Yes working 28 hours a week (the limit specified by contract) is a terrible, terrible ordeal. Oh the horror! |

I generally disagree with most of what The Urban Myth says....but seriously, if you can't work 28 hours a week in Korea how are you ever going to survive in a real job?
If they were asking you to teach the extra hours without pay that would be an obvious situation where you'd be up in arms...but doing a little overtime (for overtime pay) when your employer needs you to is just part of life and part of being an employee anywhere, not just in Korea, but anywhere. |

He mentioned that he didn't get the overtime pay. |

Actually, we are quite similar to slaves. We get a free place to stay, free travel to our new home, people are out there making sure we don't shtook the native women.
And as for prostitutes, many seemed to be getting f@cked by bosses all the time, just like a room salon girl!
I kid! |
