I like to play games with low ping, like everybody. Lately I've been playing some Counterstrike: Source and Project Reality, two games that need to be played with a relatively low ping in order to be enjoyed (especially the former).

So I've taken to Korean servers. With PR I do prefer to play on Western servers because voice communication is extremely important but only if I can find a server with a ping less than 180-200. More than that and it gets a bit ridiculous.

Anyway, Korean servers are terrible in both games. In pretty much every game I've played, actually, with the exception of Starcraft.

All Korean CS:S servers are basically varied/custom game modes that make no sense. Bunnyhop and Surf are the most common, both being fun for about ten minutes before getting really old. Half of the servers I join are just completely random, like one person will be a giant, invincible, pink bunny rabbit and everyone else will be disguised as furniture and you have to hide from the giant bunny rabbit. Sometimes it'll simply be TeamDM where everyone spawns in one giant room and tries to get as many kills as possible before dying. After dying 30 times in one minute I decided I had enough.

In Korean PR servers no one talks to each other or communicates. They just do stupid crap like crashing helicopters or having knife fights in the spawn.

I tried playing on Chinese/Japanese servers too only to find out that Koreans are usually banned from them. I can see why, when I do come across a normal Korean server playing normal game modes, it is labeled "no Steam" and just about everyone is hacking. It's not discreet either, they're obviously hacking and the rules are that the person who has the best hacks wins.

Do Koreans play Korean games like this too or do they only crap all over Western games? Anyone else find this?

They're alright because MW2 and COD4 can't be modded. There aren't many Korean players for these games though, because we all know that Sudden Attack on the Unreal Engine 2 is SO much better.

I just watched at a video of Sudden Attack gameplay(my students mention it all the time). I thought game graphics had evolved beyond the half decade old source engine. God awful graphics, details, and models.

Anyways, CS? I didn't know anyone still played that.

People still play mech warrior two ?
Interesting.
I've always loved MW2.
But we're approaching 5 territory now.

Not sure if you were joking or not, but I meant "Modern Warfare 2" not Mech Warrior 2.

...and yes, I was in a PC Bang the other day and having the "do you know, Korean _________?" conversation with the student sitting next to me. He was asking me about this game, that game (Sudden Attack, QAVA etc). I told about why foreigners can't/don't play Korean games. I think he was under the impression that foreigners didn't have games or that they were somehow inferior.

Most Korean games are basically clones of Western games and they're all on the same, ten year old, lowest bidder graphics engine. Sudden Attack et. al = Counterstrike, Warlock = BF2, Lineage = WoW and so on...

Korean games are free. Western Games are minimum $50 + recurring fees.

There are plenty of free non-Korean games... I think the majority of games that I play don't cost anything (if you're willing to include mods). I bought Half-Life 2 five years ago and have been playing it ever since in the form of free, downloadable mods.

Not all Korean games are free, either. It's a business model. For a lot of MMOs, you get the basic package for free and then a lot of very addicted people start paying for ingame items after awhile, both within the game's official system and sometimes outside of it.

Same with WoW and other games as far as I know... not sure, I hate RPGs/MMOs so I'm not an expert.

One thing that gets to me about Korean gaming is that foreigners generally aren't allowed to play them at all. Since registering for an account requires a Korean registration number, unless you have a Korean friend who is generous, playing Korean games are just about impossible. I heard that there's a gaming company in Korea that allows foreigners to make an account, however it requires you to actually go to their offices in person. Kind of makes me wish that there was a faster connection to the states. By the way, as I do agree with the list of games that Korea "copied" from America, Lineage is one game that's been around for a much longer time than WoW.

Koreans are so attached to the same thing day in and day out. They will not budge and just stick to one or two games for years. Example, Starcraft. Now, Starcraft was an innovative strategy game using resources but since then how many strategy games you think that are now better than Starcraft?! Probably at least half a dozen. Koreans will not even look at any other games except for SC.

I went to at least 5 PC bangs and trying to find new games is almost impossible. Ask them about Left 4 Dead 2, they said no. Ask them about Modern Warfare 2?! Whats that? Counter strike is the only FPS game out in their mind. It's almost unreal.

Their ability to hold one game for 10+ years is just amazing... no wonder Lineage 3 is barely off the ground.

I go to Singapore and they would have the latest FPS, MMO, strategy games out there along with the old ones. I thought coming to Korea, I would be in the middle of a gaming country but instead I find out that they are only into a few old games.

There is far more out there than Counterstrike.

AVA is an Unreal 3 engine game, playable on Pmang.com
Battlefield Online just came out on Pmang as well (EA has a share in Pmang so they port some games here, like Fifa Online and NBA street as well)
Pmang also has Raycity which is a completely playable stunt driving taxi MMORPG set on replicated streets of Seoul.

Hanbiton has Hellgate, and Warcry will be out soon (fantasy shooter)

Company of Heroes just came out on Windyzone (I cover sign-up and install in my latest blogposts)

Huxley just relaunched on Hangame.
Hangame also has Wolfteam and the upcoming Metro Conflict FPS

Netmarble has Sudden Attack which is very popular and the upcoming Battlestar which looks interesting.

PlayNC has Pointblank which has an interesting Helicopter map set in a construction zone.

Those can all be easily used by foreigners.

There is also:
Metal Rage out of Gamehi http://metalrage.gamehi.co.kr/

but youll need someone to sign-up for you. This is giant robot FPS style game.

There are about 1/2 a dozen more new tech FPS in the pipes right now. I've covered most of the games (including sign up, install, vids, translated menu screens) on my blog over the last year and a bit.

WWW below.

5 of the 7 major gaming portals allow foreign sign up. The two that don't, don't really have anything interesting anyway (Nexon and Mgame)

Nexon used to require foreigners to go to their office to make an account, but they haven't allowed foreign sign-up in 4 years. I've asked them to reconsider.

Lineage = WoW

Um, lineage came out before WoW. It can't really be a clone.
