Just a personal observation. I'm curious: is this unusual by Korean standards? How about in other countries?

Some wear glass or plastic lenses to look "smart" or whatever. Glasses obviously aren't the fashion, in my school, right now, as far less than half are wearing glasses. Though many have shocking eye sight. Eg squinting at the board or the TV screen from the third row. I can read the dialogs on the screen from as far out in the hall as you can go without actually being in another class.

Glasses are so cheap in Korea that I think parents don't hesitate to get their kid's eye checked. I didn't get glasses until University because my parents were always tight on money.

I've always wondered about the high rate of glasses in Korea.

Is it because:
- genetic deficiency?
- they 'study hard?
- they are indoors all the time?
- homogenous genetic population?

Any ideas???

Two things I'd say........Koreans think wearing glasses is a smart and sophisticated image...

......Korean opticians oblige by finding a slight imperfection in just about everyone's vision and selling them glasses.

Can you imagine a Korean optician saying to a customer, "well, the test shows you have perfect vision and don't need glasses. Off you go!!".

Now, the worrying thing would be if all those kids who wear glasses got their prescriptions from an optometrist....and weren't just sold glasses from the local optician after a dodgy eye test.

It seems on par with a Western country for 4 eyes. It's logical the entire human race has about an equal % of members claiming this, "I can't see jackshit from a distance," problem so we need glasses due to some crud with our eyeballs being slightly oblong or something stupid like a video camera permanently out of focus. This would be a serious problem if we didn't have eyeglasses or were too poor to buy them. One that could cause you great suffering, unemployment, lack of relations, and even death if you can't see what's coming your way. I guess before the eyeglasses invention came along, those with eyeballs not round enough were simply a dead duck in the water.

I observe that 2 or 3 students out of 30 have the eyeglasses in Korea.

Thats true - I have had many grade six students start wearing glasses during grade 6 - and I knew they never had any problem with their eyesight.

When I questioned some of them - they told me - its was "fashionable - to look smart".

I have watched those students study, watch the tv and play computer games - with their glasses sitting on their desk.

When they go somewhere, or want to "look smart", they put the glasses on - although they really don't need them.

I have tried on some of their glasses, and their was no different in vision between having the glasses on or having them off.

Unknown to them, actually wearing the glasses when they are not needed is harming their eyesight - so in 10 years - they really will need the glasses.

Doesn't explain why gyopos in other countries don't wear glasses like their Korean counterparts.

Question i have several students who don't wear their prescription glasses even though they should because they think they don't look good wearing them!!!!!

so many Korean kids need glasses because of HOURS AND HOURS IN DARK ROOMS STARING AT COMPUTER GAME SCREENS!!!!

ask any doctor about the effect of computers on eyesight.

All problems with eyesight are caused by strain. All problems with the eyes are relieved with relaxation and motion- Dr. William H. Bates, MD. Cured millions of people of all problems from glaucoma to migraines. Even complete blindness. His work allowed me to cure myself in 3 months. Have not ever gone back to the 'eye crutches'. Do not get sick during winding roads, airplanes etc. Never have headaches. But everyone just gets mad when I tell them because, "if it works, then why doesn't everyone use it."... I say, "same reason they have kids by accident." Then they get mad and disown me.

Many people would disagree with you that Korea has (historically) not been an isolated gene pool.

I think most of the population share the same 5 surnames (something like that). Very strict family registers are kept to try and alleviate potential genetic problems from marrying/breeding within such a closed gene pool.

Like many teachers who have taught in various parts of Korea, I'm still shocked when I walk into a classroom. I can see the 'same' face on some of the kids that I've taught in other parts of Korea. The similarities in some kids is simply amazing. I went through a phase where I used to joke about it - thinking: "Hey, that kids got face number 86."

It just means you're uncomfortable with yourself in Korea and need a way to vent your frustrations in ways that make you feel superior.
