Unfortunately, there was a big fire in Suji, beginning late afternoon May 14 and on into the night. Fortunately, I was there to record some of it. This is in the big outlet mall area there, right behind Renoma Sports Club. It's about halfway between Jukjeon and Ori subway stations.
I took all the footage from right across the street. Had my four-year-old daughter with me--and what seems like all the rest of Suji as well. Fire really brings 'em together! And if you think normal traffic and pedestrian behavior is confusion, try a municipal emergency once! Crazies just get crazier!
It's late on May 15, and I still haven't been able to find anything about it in the papers--English nor Korean, local nor national. Maybe later, though. |

My buddy was there too, lives nearby. He called to warn me as I had to come back from near the Suji E-mart area by taxi. Traffic was worse than normal along that road, but by the time I got back the fire trucks were already leaving, we passed them near Jukjeon sageori. I didn't see the fire site that night because the taxi driver took a right to avoid the traffic just before that row of shops. I did see the smoke though, huge billowing clouds of it. Yesterday I walked by the stores and most of them had their wares on the street - golf clubs etc. - and crowds of people were picking through it. A fire sale.
My buddy said high school kids often hung out behind that building smoking cigarettes.
The building was one of those apartment showrooms. The steel girders were bent like pretzels.
I must have passed by in a cab shortly before it started.
I never saw it on the news either. |
