Message from the Great Cloud Keeper in the Sky...
I love how clear he makes SMOE's stance on 6 month extensions don't you? lol...
SMOE communication - Just another reason I'll be glad to get away from them come August
--------------------------
Hi guys,
I just wanted to let you know I am getting way too many request of 6 months contracts.
My supervisor will not give them unless requested by your school.
First thing they need is to pass the evaluation and explain their case at the renew interview. Asking about it now will not help them.
If they are looking for the 6 months contracts, they will need to pass the interview first.
Even doing the interview, they are not guaranteed to get the 6 months extension SMOE only has 1 year contracts.
We are not trying to promote 6 months extension but there are certain cases we will allow it but not many.
Please advise them to really think about it and itthat 6 months are only for teachers with special cases.
Thank you |

sounds like they're saying "no" to 95% of cases, but as with everything, there are extenuating circumstances. Give SMOE a break since English is not the main language here, eh?
Why would someone want a 6 month contract as opposed to renewing another full year? It just sounds like a big headache I would not want to deal with, were I an administrator. |

Why not just renew for a whole year and resign with one month notice when you want to? |

From what I hear he spends a lot of time going on about how well to do he was growing up in the U.S...
Besides, this is a message to English speakers from their employer... You would hope that they would at least get an NSET to check it over first
Why wouldn't SMOE want to renew teachers in August for 6 months? Don't have to put out for a flight home now, don't have to pay severance now, don't have to put out recruiter fees/orientation fees now, plus the schools have an NSET until the end of the school year in March, and can start with a new NSET when the school year begins... |

Probably because there's applicants right now ready and willing to work the full year. |

How does it make financial sense to hire a new teacher when you've already got one in country that doesn't need flight/training/etc?... You'll have just as many applicants come August I'm sure, lol... |

I dunno. Convenience? Certainty, maybe. Apartment issues. I dunno. All I do know is that EPIK has halved the number of national places to about 500 and current PS teachers should piss or get off the pot because there's others here who want our turn |

SMOE and EPIK can't be doing that great for applicants if they're letting ads like this one go out:
GET OFF YOUR BUTTAND APPLY!

EPIK and EPIK SEOUL Public schools are filling fast and the deadline for applications is fas...t approaching. It is time to turn the TV off, walk away from the JUMBO pack of cherios and FOCUS!!!....the SEINFELD MARATHON will be there when you get back. So get off your butt and send in your application. Heaven forbid you should have only private schools to apply to for AUGUST!

There is no deadline. The deadline is whenever they've filled all their available places. Of course, they don't actually know how many places are available.

Seeing as EPIK might be issuing contracts in July for an August start on the far side of the planet, I think a lot of people are going to be applying to private schools rather than face the stress of dealing with a government organisation that can't get its act together. |

I doubt EPIK or SMOE had anything to do with "letting" that ad go out. |

Then they have no control over the people who screen applicants for their positions, which is even worse no? |

actually, i believe severance is pro-rated after working a full year for an employer. so SMOE would still have to pay that, plus the exit and entrance allowance (they'd only not have to pay for the 2nd exit allowance), and they'd have to give some extra vacation days for a 6 month renewal (renewal, nonetheless).
the only thing SMOE would get out of this is not having to send another person to orientation. also remember, august tends to be the greater hiring season for SMOE, so it wouldn't be in their best interests if they weren't to take advantage of that and hire people available for 1 year contracts.
by the way, i don't think that email is so bad or unclear. the english is not 100%, but it's a lot better than i've seen at another school board in korea. |

Everything nomadish said is right on. The district I teach in sent out a notice last semester regarding 6mo extensions. One week of vaca is in the contract, plus your 2mill re-signing bonus and 2 week bonus vaca. There is no exit allowance, but the severance is pro-rated and you still get your pension. |
