Hi there,

We are hoping to take our cat home with us to South Africa in September and are looking for some advice!

We know all about the SA procedures etc for importing a pet to SA, but we are more looking for advice on flight procedures, etc. We have never taken a pet on an airplane before!

We have found a good flight with Korean air to hong kong and then with SAA from hong kong to JNB, then JNB to Durban (2 hour wait in Hong kong, and 3 hour wait in JNB). Korean air will allow the cat under the seat in the cabin, but SAA won't - this is the part we are worried about!

Any advice/experiences with this would be great!

Thanks!

Hi.

I suggest you email So Hee at Chungwha clinic in Seoul. she is the pet travel expert and will be able to give you really great advice.

Her email is- [email protected]

I know that South Africa only allows pets as cargo - this means they must arrive under the plane. This is the same for the UK, Austrailia and others. Some countries allow pets to arrive as in cabin and this is easier and cheaper but not an option for other countries. While it may seem best for you to have your cat in the cabin for the portion of the journey that its ok I think it wont be an option. The reason for this is because you are flying on a ticket with connections and you would need to check the animal in for the entire duration. Also in-cabin and cargo require different crate types. in-cabin must be soft and have flexible frame to allow it to fit under the seat infront. Cargo requires a hard airline crate. This MUST be airline approved (Chungwha clinic has a huge selection). Do not just buy a hard crate at any pet shop as if it doesn't meet the exact standards it will be refused.

You also need to start the process of blood testing etc ASAP if you are leaving in September.

I hope this helps.
