Article here.
Quote: |
FEINSTEIN: There are 17 of us [women in the Senate] now. When I came in there were two. It was known as the Year of the Woman because a few of us got elected to the Senate.
SELLERS: So the environment really has changed now that there are 17, and its easier? And here you are on regulatory reformis there going to be this?
FEINSTEIN: Well, I actually think that if we had all women, we would solve the problem. But, I think there will be a bill now. Im delighted that this impasse has finished, that this debate will move forward, that there will hopefully be substantial amendments and not [inaudible] amendments to incite one side or another, what we call message amendments, but practical amendments to make the bill better. And if thats the case, I do believe well have a bill. |
Modern feminism in action. A man merely joking about such a thing would get evicerated, while a woman speaking entirely frankly and openly while making such a statement is perfectly acceptable. |

I can't stand that woman. I voted against her when she was up for re-election even though I knew nothing about the man she ran against. I knew she was a shoo-in, so mine was more like a "protest" vote than anything else. |

Is it more insulting to men that she be allowed to make such comments without criticism...
Or more insulting to women that the comment is viewed by the media as so outrageous and disingenuous that it is unworthy of news space?
After all, is the sexist claim that men are superior to women, but the apparently not sexist claim that women are superior to men, indicate that the sexist claim is terrible because it is feasible and the not sexist claim irrelevant because it is unthinkable?
Sooner or later intellectual dishonesty comes back to bite you and your peers. But, of course, for some "free-thinkers" vitriol is more important than truth. |

And here's another casually yet blatantly sexist comment from a politician. This time it's Janet Long of the Florida House of Representatives, speaking on abortion:
Quote: |
During last week's heated debate in Florida's House of Representatives over a misguided measure to require pregnant woman to pay for an ultrasound before obtaining an abortion, Representative Janet Long of Tampa, a progressive and highly-regarded member of the Democratic caucus, made a statement in opposition to the bill that was as rhetorically compelling as it was intellectually concerning. She told opponents: "Stand down if you don't have ovaries." |
The article goes on to attack this idea at length in fairly effective fashion. Imagine a male politician saying, "People without *beep* need to shut up on this issue." |

Not sure about a politician but you realise that bigoted statements do not exist in a vacuum? It depends on who says them.
Able folk, if that's the right word, making fun of disabled people is not the same as disabled people making fun of able folk.
Think upon my words. |

I thought upon them, and deem them rubbish. Anyone who says, "It's socially acceptable for person X to mock (or verbally attack, etc) you, but not acceptable for you to mock them in return," is not someone whose opinion on the matter I can hold in any respect. |

That was the perfect response. You didn't need to add anything to it. |

Hold my opinion in whatever you wish, old bean.
Fact is, if one group of people have a long huge history of mocking the other, then when it quietens down a little and the other group mocks the first a small amount, well, I think we can cope. |

Should a history of a people define a person? Should a group of people define a person? Should we be intellectually dishonest for the sake of history? |

This is a strange Web site. What Feinstein said clearly wasn't intended as an "attack" on anyone ... it was just a silly cliche, which undoubtedly stems from the fact that women and men tend to have different styles of talking and interacting. I think what she was getting at is that as long as men are in the majority in the Senate, the male style is likely to dominate (much as it does here on Dave's). It was a careless comment and I don't think there was much thought behind it, but calling it "bigoted" is a huge overstatement. |

"Women belong in the kitchen," is also just a silly cliche.

And yet, had someone said something like, "If we could just get all the blacks out of congress we could get this done," apologists like you would no doubt be taking a different tune. Spare me the hypocrisy. |

There's an old cliche that women are more understanding and get along with each other better. Anyone who really knows women would tell you that's definitely not true. Just look at "the View." |
