http://www.khou.com/news/Candy-Gets-Third-Grader-A-Weeks-Detention-93033319.html

Quote:
A third-grader at Brazos Elementary was given a weeks detention for possessing a Jolly Rancher.

School officials in Brazos County are defending the seemingly harsh sentence. The schools principal and superintendent said they were simply complying with a state law that limits junk food in schools.

But the girls parents say its a huge overreaction.

I think its stupid to give a kid a weeks worth of detention for a piece of candy, said Amber Brazda, the girls mother. "The whole thing was just ridiculous to me."

Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice.

Common sense just isn't as common as it used to be. If educators don't possess it, how the heck do we expect the next generation to learn it?

If I was that parent I would sue the school for harassment.

Agree with the above, Americans have no common sense anymore. There was a time (before PC became savy) where things were cut and dry.

If our educators can't use common sense, how are we suppose to expect the next generation to use it?

It's a harsh punishment, but I'm glad someone is trying to get junk food out of the schools. Now if they'd start providing fresh fruit and vegetables to their students and get unhealthy food out of the school cafeterias ...

That, and question marks.

It has absolutely nothing to do with Americans...what..every other country...everyone uses common sense all the time? What's common to one is not common to another. Besides....more than half of the U.S. population is foreign!

I was speaking from my own country's prospective. As an American I feel that we have lost our way, where every little thing offends and as a result we have lost our reasoning.

Can't speak for other countries and have no wish to do so.

This is why. These foreigners (immigrants) start to change the make up of schools, so school boards start to hire people from these groups to work in the schools. Common sense goes, PC stays and little Annie is busted for eating a CANDY at school. WTF? I guess teachers aren't giving candies as prizes.

Kids and Candy are about as staple as Wall Street and screwing the little guy...

The school should provide healthy lunches to the children but if a child brings his/her own lunch and it just includes ho-hos and a can of pepsi how is it the school's business what the parents choose to provide? -Theres my question mark-. I don't like government intrusion into what we have for lunch.

If the school has a policy against eating in class then the teacher can just tell the girl to put the candy away or send her to the principal if she doesn't listen. A week of detention is extreme.

Sounds like someone didn't read the article...

Quote:
Brazos Elementary Principal Jeanne Young, said the problem, in this instance, was that the candy was provided by another student not the girls parents.

Which makes it more insane. A kid is supposed to turn down candy from a friend..

What makes you question, what kind of a friend it was?

What kid doesn't know all the pc b/s that could be considered before they gave you something.

It was a set up I tell you. Their "supposed" friend knew they would get busted and set them up.

Damm, dirty friend. Next thing, they will be carrying in listening devices to listen to you.

Father Gestapo, Mother NKVD, you won the war damm you. Razz

I'm just going by what you originally quoted. If you think there's more pertinent information you should post that too.
