Hello all.

I am due to start my two year part-time Masters in English Language Teaching soon at Sussex University but my wife and I are starting to make plans to return back to Korea. I had taught in Korea for about three years and now I teach/examine in the UK. I also have a CELTA and am eligible for an F2-1 visa so am really flexible. What sort of salary could I expect? Would universities bite my hand off?

I am looking into University work and wonder what the process is for applying for these positions.

Please feel free to private message me.

Good for you you have the F-2-1 Visa. They really will make you life so much easier (I hear).

But the experience can work. Some places will look and say two year okay you get this much more. But a good chunk of the time the experience does not really prove much of a advantage. People think okay I was in one job got 2.2 million. Finished a year got 2.3 with renewal or another contract. You start to think that I will get 100000 extra or more for each year I get. So after three years I should get 300000 on top of what the jobs says.

The CELTA is a little bonus. But many people will comment that CELTA is more of a bonus in Europe and other countries. Korea likes TEFL and that.

For University jobs my advice - come to Korea and look. When the school can see you in person and Interview you. The more likely you will get a job. Plus it will save you of getting attached to a scummy Uni job that in actually ends up being a unigwon job.

Good Luck

Skippy, thanks for the reply. So I guess the best bit of advice is to come to Korea first of all (perhaps by a new job; public school) and then look around for a decent Uni job.

a) If you need someone to spring for the ticket and are willing to work a year looking for the plum jon, this may be your best bet.

b) If you are in a rush, just jump on the plane when you are ready and start hitting the pavement when you land. It'll cost more out of pocket but you get the "Uni job" 1 or 2 terms sooner.

Personally, I'd go with plan "A".

It seems that most unis will not hire somebody outside of Korea (can't blame them really when there are so many instructors in Korea already). I would suggest coming over and trying for jobs face-to-face. With all the ash in Europe it wouldn't be a bad idea to plan that trip soon.

I guess the salary could be around 2.5 or 3 with no housing (most unis don't offer housing it seems). Also some universities are on a different pension scheme (since last year I think) so expect more taken out there. All in all the hours would be better and with greater holidays there will be opportunities for you to study or do camps to make extra money.

To be honest you have just started your course and I don't mean to be snippy but it is possible that some unis will say "so what?" because I am sure that they have heard that "I've enroled at such and such a place" line again and again. I would advise getting the unis enrolment letter saying "congratulations you are in!," photocopying that and placing it into your resume when you send it off to universities. It really can't hurt.

Also, since you have an F-2 you can work part time in a hagwon or company. Just as long as the uni doesn't find out then you should be fine.

Happy hunting.

How much do you want to hussle? 3.5 to 5.5 depending on your work ethics.
