Just curiious as mine are remarkably slow.

I'm downloading western movies and tv shows like the Wire and such. The speeds usually average at 60-80 kb/s. There will be moments when I'll connect to someone and I'll get it up to 4-500 kb/s but then its gone after a few minutes.

Is this normal? If a torrent like Iron Man has nearly 3,000 seeders and I'm connected to like 30 of them, shouldn't it be blazingly fast?

I'm using uTorrent by the way, but it seems to be across everything. Downloading from sites like megaupload are painfully slow as well.

Did I screw something up when I port forwarded so I could download NFL games?

I've got a crappy buffalo wireless router that shows up at the typical 55 mbps in the tray.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

Probably. Sounds like a port forwarding issue.

Can't really tell you what to do though. Haven't a clue.

Was getting just over 6 mb/s the other day on a Starcraft II torrent Very Happy

thanks for the input.

i'll check out my peer settings.

As for the port fowarding, I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't even remember what I did which makes it pretty hard to reverse. Ugh.

Most torrents will download at 10% of your actual internet speed. e.g. your internet speed is 8mbp/s your torrents could download at 800kbp/s.

This is based on optimum conditions, ie. there being a good seeders to leechers ratio (you may have seen 3000 seeders listed but how many leechers were there?) and those seeders you're connected to not capping their upload rate, or actually having a decent upload rate.

I usually use private trackers like The Box, Waffles, Demonoid, etc and the best I get is around 5mbp/s, on a 45-50mbp/s connection.

Torrent is ridiculously fast here. Get like 5MBps download rate...downloading an 800MB movie file takes like 5-10 min.

http://ezrss.it/

use this to get the most up to date - and usually most popular TV shows.
I haven't used utorrent in about 5 years, but with vuze i can set up automatic downloads from the rss feed.
heck yesterday it took me just over an hour for the complete spawn animated series. (4+ gigs)

Torrent has rss capability. I quit using Azureus because of bloat. Did they fix that?

not really, they've just added much more user-friendly functionality.
It's a media app in it's own right now, and not just a behind the scenes downloader

While some public trackers are pretty fast, your best bet is to get on a good private site. A good private tracker will always have a lot of members who use seedboxes to increase download speeds. The more seedboxes the fast your download will be.. Even with a basic internet connection your speeds should top 1mbs for a new torrent with a good seed base. But you wont get those speeds if your downloading too many torrents.

Some members on this forum have said they have a hard time getting into private torrents sites because they can't keep a decent ratio.

I would suggest those people spend a few dollars and rent a seedbox to boost your ratio. Most seedbox providers offer 20.00 (USD/month) boxes that have good upload speeds.. much better than you could get with your basic internet connection.

So rent one for a month, boost up that ratio and you'll be good for 6 months before you need to rent one again.

Or stick with a public tracker and wait it out.

Regarding private trackers:

I joined this site just prior to coming to Korea and have gotten into 2 EXCELLENT private torrent sites.

http://www.torrent-invites.com/index.php?referrerid=50959

On each site, my d/l speeds, depending on the torrent, get as high as 8-10mb/s (that's megabyte, not bit--still not sure on the abbreviations).

As noted, ratios can be a problem, but the solution is "don't be stupid". Download freeleach torrents and seed, download things as quick as you can that you want, and remember that everything is about SHARING. It's not wise to go onto a new tracker and grab all 10 seasons of saved by the bell. Start small and build a buffer and EARN what you want. Still beats paying for it, no?

good lord, i'd die if i could get those speeds. i'm averaging around 80 to 150 kilobytes a second on most of my torrents from public sites isohunt, the pirate bay, and extra torrent.

when i download something i feel like i'm back in the old 56k modem days where i start it and leave the house for the and hope its done when i get back. es horrible!!!!

one of these days i'm going to try and sit down and try and reverse my port forward, but i'll be moving soon and will probably run into problems again so i might just wait.
