Got an old laptop that has generally worked well for me in the year since I bought it. A few months ago it started having serious issues then basically shut down. I got it tuned up, had Windows re-installed, and everything's been fine.

I just went to Jeju Island. Noticed that if I watched a movie, after five or ten minutes it would get choppy for a few minutes, then shut off (the entire laptop). The bottom of the laptop was way, way hot. It would cool off and shut back on after ten minutes or so.

So now, no movie watching (or music listening), the same thing happens after an hour or so- gets really hot, shuts off.

What can I do? I'm only here two more months, so I don't want to buy a new laptop before I start traveling, but I also don't want to keep pouring money into an old laptop who may be in its twilight.

PLEASE HELP!!! Is there a simple/cheap/obvious solution??

It would seem more than likely that the fan inside your laptop has died. Or maybe the CPU heatsink has partially detached from the CPU.

Either way, both are cheap and easy fixes for any decent computer engineer.

Bring it to the manufacturers service center which is no doubt located somewhere in Yongsan, Seoul.

Not sure how you'd feel about checking it out yourself, but I'd be inclined to open it up and blow all the dust out with a can of air, then check all the connections previously mentioned. If that fails, I'd try a laptop cooler like this one. Then I'd be tempted to junk it if that failed. It shouldn't be failing after a year of use - how's the warranty on it?

Well, some A/S centers might have a helpful and customer-focused atmosphere, while others are all out to squeeze those people with out of warranty products.......

If it actually is just a fan replacement then, by my reckoning, the cost of the fan should be 10,000 and the labor cost 30,000 max. Anyone charging you over 50,000 to just replace a fan is getting greedy.

First thing I would do is buy a can of air (couple of thousand won from a supermarket). Take the bottom off the case and blow the dust out. It's amazing how much dust a computer can suck in.

make sure that you are only using the computer on a hard surface (not on a bed).

Another thing you could try is to pick up a laptop pad for the laptop to sit on

sounds like an aging capacitor, if it's located in something replaceable, like the dvd drive, you are ok, otherwise it's time to part it out

Really? You've worked in IT for years upon years like myself?

If I have, what would you do? Admit I am right owing to my credentials? Worked in IT...great. I suppose even the janitor at IBM could make such vacuous claims.

It is clearly a heat problem; the symptoms are textbook. Laptops are prone, particularly as they age and lack regular maintenance. An "aging capacitor"...sure, a very slim chance, but with computers, Occam's razor is the best way to proceed and then work into obscurity from the most likely origin.

Then again, you do sound like a typical computer repairman, plying cash from the cattle with obtuse, fear-inducing statements.

If it isn't heat, I put my money on the reverse flux conductor.

Did you work with hardware???

An aging capacitor is way down the list of likely problems.

So you have a laptop that gets really hot after doing intensive things and then shuts off after about 10 minutes

You can
A. buy a 2000 won can of air, unscrew the bottom and clean the dust out and make sure the fan is working.

B. go through and replace part by part cost 50-000 to ...

It's funny how in this discussion not once has the OP even mentioned the make and model of the laptop... Confused
