I can do it myself? I thought installing memory was difficult in Macbooks. Are there instructions online?

Doesn't anyone bother to do their own research anymore? If you enter 'macbook' and 'memory' into any search engine, you'll get a staggering number of hits, including Apple's own support page and a stack of how to videos. Rolling Eyes

ha-ha. Born to be a grumpy IT guy Rolling Eyes

Looks like it's easier than I thought. For some reason I thought you had to get a tech to install it.

So I can buy 2gb cards on Gmarket for a total of 8GB? It's a late 2008 model. If that's the case, then my only trouble is that I am running XP (I like running windows on a mac) and it will only recognize 3GB. Will it work to upgrade to Windows 7?

Does your Mac support 4GB or 8GB? You can't just put in as much RAM as you like. It depends on the spec of the motherboard.

Only 64-bit versions of Windows will use more than 3.2GB of memory.

My Macbook only has two memory slots, so 2 slots X 2GB = 4GB max.

I have an old version of Parallels running on my Mac and I think it's topped out at 512MB of memory. What Windows on Mac software are you using?

if your just using windows on it, you're prob better off using bootcamp and run windows natively

If your going to get ram , get 2 of the same sticks (not 2gb and 1gb)

Youd be better off getting 2gb and 2gb . It might not use the full 4 gb but the ram will be more efficient

Depending on the model of Macbook you have, installing the RAM is insanely easy.

http://www.crucial.com/

Go there and get the specifications for the type of RAM you need. On my Macbook, about the same age, I needed DDR2 667 Mhz of notebook RAM. Whilst in the US I ordered directly from them, though I don't remember cost.

If you need info on what speed your computer is, click the Apple in the top left hand corner, then "About My MAC". It looks to be about $120 for a 4GB set (I second the notion of wanting 2 x 2GB).

For instruction videos, check out www.ifixit.com

Lastly, be VERY careful during the installation. DO NOT open the RAM until you're ready to put it in. Don't carry it while wearing socks on carpet. Ram is incredibly delicate and easy to fry, wasting you $120.

Second lastly, remember that doing this yourself voids the warranty on your MAC. At the same time, though, an official Apple upgrade could cost even more (probably about $400 if I had to guess.)

Hope I've helped.
