I get e-mails from the US embassy from time to time telling me that I will get an e-mail or phone call from my volunteer warden in the event of an invasion/war. This sounds good theoretically, but maybe it is a little too optomistic. Afterall, it assumes that: 1) the warden would somehow survive the initial blast/dosing 2) that the warden, even if he/she survived, wouldn't run/ freak out and forget all about calling/emailing everyone on the list 3) that the internet/phone/electric power line infrastructure would somehow survive all of the blasts, terrorist attacks, etc.

What I really want from the embassy is to know the real skinny, ie the safest places to go; the places one should definitely avoid; where I can access stockpiled guns and ammo; the safest, most direct access to Pusan (for evacuation by US Navy), etc.

Does anyones embassy (UK, Canada, Kiwi, Germany, etc. provide this information to its citizens? I just don't have much faith in this whole warden system, although I do appreciate their efforts nonetheless.

The Canadian evacuation system in Korea also uses wardens. They don't give much information regarding emergency procedures except what is listed on their website, which are pretty obvious things like buy bottled water, etc.

Last week I got an email from the Canadian embassy saying that they are testing the warden system and to reply to the email to ensure that it was received. A little later, they sent a follow up email saying that the email was intended for wardens only and to disregard and not reply. So it seems that they are readying the system in the event that they may need to use it.

You really think the embassy is going to tell you were you can grab an M-16 so you can take on the NORKS Wink

If something does go down, and the odds are 0.00001 percent in my view, it'll be chaos on a scale you cannot imagine and it'll be a total free-for-all.

I wouldn't count on wardens.

How are you going to get South? All the major highways will be blocked off.

I feel the same way. I don't have much faith in this warden system they have prepared.

A real emergency would involve explosions and chaos. The warden system would work if NK gave us some warnings before a strike. And what's the point of that?

I still don't think there will actually be an attack, because the powers that be have interest in keeping North Korea as is. However, because of there is a small chance of surprise attack, shouldn't we be better prepared than this? "Pack a bag and stay underground" is about all I know.

A 1950s housewife would fare better than I would. That's what we need is some public service announcements a la post WW2....how to survive in the face of war....cmon AFN, educate us sheltered and naive teacherfolk..!

I found it a little unsettling that some sort of screw-up was made, at this early juncture before anything's even gone down....Again, it's obvious we will not be able to rely on the Canadian Embassy authorities. Just as helpful as they ever were!

If something really happens, I can walk to the embassy in about 30 minutes. That's my plan. If the embassy happens to be in a crater at that point, odds are I am too.

Oh come on, as if you've never made a wee screw up at work. It was a tiny error made by clerical staff, not an oil tanker leaking into the Gulf of Mexico, or imaginary weapons of mass destruction.

Oh Wylies99, where would you be without your rolling eye emoticon. You know exactly what I meant, and I was being facetious. I'm beginning to be less concerned with immanent war, and more with the state of our communal sense of humour.

They only work 15 minutes a week. You'd think they'd screw up less.

Well one of the jobs of an embassy is to provide basic assistance to citizens of its country living abroad. It would look bad, especially for embassies from countries that send large contingents of teachers to Korea like the US and Canada, to up sticks in the event of war and abandon their foreign nationals to their fate.

There's generally not much embassy staff can do but they are expected to do something. As an EU citizen, if I get to Korea I can avail of the services of the embassy of any EU member state. I'd imagine the policy of the Irish embassy might be "get on the bus with the Brits".
