| I did it last year in Gangnam within less than a half an hour. If you are on an E-2 visa, you have to have had residency here for 3 years. Maybe that has changed, don't really know. |

| Thanks -- I'll give it a try tomorrow morning...although it seems they want a notarized copy and embassy certificate, which may not be possible the same day. |

does "domestic" mean you have to have your korean d.l. before int'l???
my assumption is you show up with your original country's license and can get an international one in 30 min. for 7000WON.
am i wrong?? |

Sounds too easy to be true and doesn't jive with this:

Effective February 1, 2010, the Korean government is requiring American citizens and other non-U.S. citizen applicants with U.S. driver�s licenses to bring a notarized affidavit from the U.S. Embassy attesting to the authenticity of their U.S.-issued driver�s license in order to obtain a Korean license. Expired driver�s licenses are not acceptable under new Korean government regulations. The Korean issuing authority for driver�s licenses reserves the right to deny any application to obtain a Korean driver�s license. Please make an appointment through our online appointment system to execute this affidavit. A blank affidavit form is available at the Embassy. The notarial fee is $30.00 ($20.00 for each subsequent notarial). |

You need a certification from the US Embassy stating that your US license is real. Then you take that along with your license to the DLA and they will swap it out for a Korean one. They keep the US one though and you can get it back before you leave the country if you want. When I went to get mine done they told me that on an E-2 I'm not eligible for the straight swap, but I'd have to take the written test as well. It wasn't worth the hassle so I just send my stuff home for an international permit.
Or if you want an actual international drivers license you can mail your US license, a check, the application form, and a passport photos to AAA back in the states or CAA in Canada. They'll turn around and send you your license back with the Intl permit. Likewise you can send your stuff home to a family member and have them go in person to AAA and send it back and it will likely be a quicker turnaround. |
