About ten years ago, I traveled from Hiroshima to Sendai on local tickets, camping at shrines and temples at night. I was broke.

I'm going back soon. Not as broke, but my idea is to buy a rail pass and just go all over, camping at night, using public baths.

Just wondering if anyone has done this. I don't want to insult the locals, but don't want to take buses to ridiculous car camping areas either. It would be nice to jump off in small towns and head off to the woods for the night, getting up and leaving before anyone gets po'd.

Any recommendations?
