I'm stateside and planning to go to Korea in August. Two of the guys from my graduating class are in Korea right now and two more are starting the process. Has the recession caused a huge influx of American college grads to Korea? Will this affect my chances of finding a good job there?

When I first came here everyone and their father was Canadian. Now the waygook populace is getting more Americanized.

Hey, buddy, who are you callin' huge?!?!

I would really appreciate it if you would reword your sentiments to reflect the topic in question more accurately, such as this: "Has there been a great influx of ridiculously good-looking and amazingly intelligent Americans?"

Oh, how I love to amuse myself when I'm bored.

I'm from Canada. When I decided to come here I found out like 20-30% of my high school graduating class had been here at some point. 1-2 is nothing.

There are stats floating around from time to time on E-2 visa country numbers and 2006 was the big year when the number of Americans surged upward to surpass the number of Canadians, in conjunction with that year being the big push to put native language speakers into the public schools (one in each school the lofty goal). 2006 also happens to be the year the hagwons paid the most on average - no coincidence - with job postings in the 2.2-2.4 range across the board, it was very easy for me to shortlist jobs paying 2.5 or more, the hagwon industry in big need for a while of applicants that spring.

Even without those stats it was obvious. In 2002 or 2003 I met so many fellow Canadians here. In 2008 and 2009 I've come across more Americans than Canadians in my travels hereabouts.

The Dave's ESL Cafe research centre shows that the increased number of Taco Bell related threads, coupled with the falling numbers of Maple Leaf backpacks can be directly correlated to the rising population of American ESL teachers.
