Hi, I'm at Fall 2010 applicant with Epik
I just got my contract today (I'm SMOE) and my pay level has gone down to level G from F, which is what it was accepted as in the application. Considering I sent all the correct documents I really can't understand this and hope it is an administrative error. Although, to be honest, although I'll complain to epik, if they refuse to change it I'm still going to go. I was just surprised. Has this happened to anyone else?
I am guessing that because I have received my contract now and it is too late to receive another I have to sign it and when I do I have then agreed to the pay it stipulates. This is really annoying but I can't see any method by which to fight it. Any ideas? |

| Why is it too late too receive another? They can't email a new one for you to sign with the correct pay designation indicated? You said they accepted you at a different pay scale - do you have documentation for that acceptance at that level? Make a copy of that confirmation and include it with your request for a correct version of your contract. You can always sign your copies of a corrected contract that you print (3 copies) and they can add their signatures when they receive them before they apply for your visa confirmation. |

| I'm with EPIK Fall 2010 and is placed in Daegu. I received my contract today and in this contract, I am listed as Level 3, which is the lowest, but I am actually a level 2 (second lowest) because I possess a TESOL cert. In one of the packages, it states that once I show them the 'real' TESOL certificate, they will bump me up to level 2 since so far, I've only showed them a photocopy of the TESOL cert and not the real thing. Maybe this is the same for you? |

| Its better to get the correct contract before you sign. It used to be that when you upgraded your qualifications, you were immediately bumped up in pay. Today, many contracts exclude that and have a clause that states once you sign at a certain level, youre stuck there for the duration. Be very careful about that and dont assume they will move you up a level when you show the certificate after you arrive. Read the contract very carefully and/or get something in writing from the Provincial Office of Edcation that you will be working for that states you will be bumped up after you show them the 'real' original certificate. Words dont matter much here, get it in writing. |

For EPIK and GEPIK at least, and most likely SMOE, it states in the contract that if you "obtain further degree or certificate during the contract term, he/she will be promoted to the next applicable employment category in the month following once the necessary document has been submitted. However, promotions shall be limited to one pay category increase per year."
So they are probably waiting for an 'official' copy. If you show it to them right away they should be able to correct it before your first paycheck. |

That used to be the case, some contracts have changed recently (as I talked about in my first post). I believe the Chungnam POE is one that is instituting the 'no raises' clause and there are probably others (Chungbuk as of March of this year?). Check your contract to make sure before you sign it or you could be out 100 000w a month for your entire year... If it says you sign at the rate and cant be raised with completion of higher qualifications (or it it says nothing about raises), then get a new contract with your salary at the proper level before you sign anything to give them.
I also want to point out the basically no foreign teachers work for EPIK. Epik is just a public placement agency. A template contract that was given to your POE by EPIK and your POE has edited and modified it as they see fit. Contracts can even vary from county to county or school to school - dont assume it is the same as everyone else's. Read YOUR contract. |

Agreeing with Oculus on this, I got shafted on a raise (TESOL Cert) because I had already received a raise that year (one year experience) despite the fact it was a new contract. They have been squeezing hard on that stuff lately. |
